What is the main age group this book is written for ?

My 10 year old daughter loves it and can use it independently. 8+ is the age recommendations on the box.

Is this set too difficult for a soon to be eight year old? He has lots of legos, and loves building with them.

An 8 year should be able to build with it. It does require a lot of your own Legos.

Does the lego classic medium creative brick box 10696 have everything i need to make all the machines?

I think you will need more. For example, the pop-up flag & falling hammer project uses 11 (2 of those included) 8x2's. One project also includes a 4 peg slope brick that I can't see in the picture of the brick box. For the pulley and bucket project, you'll need what looks like 28 4x2's (or pieces that add up to those).

It's kind of a trap, but more like build and play with lego. You build something with lego and put it together. Then you will see a chain reaction.
