Excellent primer! Dries kinda clear so you’re not sure it’s going to work. Used along with their deck paint to redo the front porch on my 100 year old house. Stripped old paint best I could and sanded. Applied two coats of this then 4 coats of the final paint. Been one year and looks as good as day one. Pricey but you get what you pay for. If you have a demanding application consider using this primer.

This product, followed by the polyurethane, sanded coating supplied by the same company, applied perfectly based on instructions, failed in less than a year! The price was six times the cost of 5/4 by 4“ clear cedar decking. That is not even counting the 5/4 inch tongue and groove plywood, but literally just the liquid rubber products, six times the cost of cedar!

This primer is thin like water and is clear so it leaves a shine on the deck. Should soak into the wood better.

There seems to be some reviews here for the liquid rubber, when this is supposed to be about the PRIMER you put down before the liquid rubber. This primer is the bonding agent between the liquid rubber and the material you’re applying it to you. Do not skip this step. This review is for the PRIMER: I ordered a gallon (128 ounces), for my project(267 square feet) and I ended up only using about 1/3 of it. This product reminds me of non-fat milk, and is just as runny (but dries clear). This is NOT thick! My project was to refinish a balcony area that already had some sort of product very similar to the liquid rubber. I used a pressure washer one day, then a few days later I used a blower to make sure there wasn’t any dust. I live near the Seattle area and did this project in early September. I used blue painters tape to mask off all surrounding areas. I used a level on its side and a pencil to draw lines on the posts because I wanted to make sure the bottom one inch of the posts were sealed as well (I recommend taking off the blue painters tape within 12 hours of applying the liquid rubber. I took mine off after around 4 hours because it was already dry). I used a regular paint brush to edge in everywhere as thick as I could, which is pretty hard with this being so runny. I applied 2 coats, the second one hour after the first because it dried pretty quick in 70 degree direct sunlight. Then I used a 3/8 nap roller to apply two coats over the rest of the area. This product does not really have an odor. I was able to rinse out the brush for use again. I applied this in the morning because I wanted to apply the liquid rubber the same day. The instructions say to apply the liquid rubber within 24 hours of using the primer, and before the night if dew is forecasted overnight. I would recommend doing this project during the summer time. I used this product when rebuilding the roof on my 1992 Coleman pop-up camper. I used the product to prime and seal the exterior wood of the camper roof. I researched this product before using it. I called liquid rubber and they very nicely answered my questions. They explained that this primer product is much like an epoxy sealer primer. It is very user-friendly and you do not have to mix two components. It really binds to the wood and makes the final topcoat of the liquid rubber RV roof coating really grab. You should not expect this primer to really color, or change the appearance of the wood, a whole lot. It is merely a bonding agent to be used between the wooden substrate and the topcoat. It goes on kind of milky/watery, and then dries clear over the wood.

Expensive but worth the money. Highly recommended.

Goes on quite easily, roller would work fine. I used brush to get between spaces on deck boards. Hardest part is opening the container.....the stuff has lower viscosity than water i think and the package involves putting a sealing tape around thelid......10 minute job to get off

I purchased this product to make sure my work on a cement porch remained in good condition for a long time. This is multi purpose primer is watery so easy to spread onto the surface with a brush or roller etc. It gets into all the cracks. I had to wait until weather cooperated, first way too hot and high humidity or it affects dry time. I washed and scrubbed my porch to remove flaking paint and let that dry. Then applied a good coating of the primer and let it dry well. The next day applied my new coating of paint and it looks great again. I should have had this product to begin with but thought it was not needed. I was wrong on cement! I could have saved myself a lot of work. Clean up is very easy, soap and water while it is wet even on clothes. The 3.79 L will do a 200 sq. ft. I will definitely buy this product again for future projects.

Hard work to paint the pond but we'll worth it

I wish I could give zero stars. This product was a complete and expensive failure. ***What I Did Right: 1) Researched extensively before purchase, 2) Verified wood moisture with professional equipment, 3) Followed ALL website guidelines for preparation, 4) Applied primer as directed (4 units purchased), 5) Applied coating in optimal conditions (temperatures 12-22°C, no rain), 6) Maintained adequate drying time between coats, 7) Kept all Amazon receipts ***What Happened: Applied to four decks, a dock, three sets of stairs, and front entrance in September 2024. By spring 2025 (only 6 months later), the coating was peeling extensively across ALL surfaces. ***Cost: Initial products: $1,839.16; Remediation (removal and re-staining): Over $2,000 to date - still unfinished. Total loss: Nearly $4,000 ***Company Response: When I contacted Liquid Rubber with documentation, photos, and receipts, they blamed "wood checking" (natural cracks in lumber). Their website NEVER clearly states that wood checking disqualifies surfaces from using this product. The term "sound wood" alone doesn't communicate this requirement. Their representative acknowledged on our call that "the average DIY customer may not understand wood checking" and that they "continuously work to improve educational materials." Despite admitting this documentation gap EXISTS, they refused any reimbursement or assistance. ***The Real Issue: This isn't about wood quality—it's about inadequate product documentation. If their website clearly warned that wood with checking should not be coated with this product, I would have chosen a traditional stain and avoided this disaster entirely. ***Bottom Line: Save yourself thousands of dollars and immense frustration. The product failed within months despite perfect application, and the company takes zero responsibility for gaps in their own documentation. Look elsewhere.
