Instrumentation and Control Systems Documentation is a practical, illustrated guide to the key documents used in designing, constructing, commissioning and operating industrial process plants. Written for engineers, technicians, operators and maintenance staff, it demonstrates how clear, consistent documentation, from process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) to instrument specification forms, loop diagrams and logic descriptions, improves safety, reduces costs and speeds construction and start-up. This book emphasizes the use of industry standards (notably ISA guidance), the development of site-specific rules with stakeholder input and the maintenance of a single master source of data, so that drawings and databases remain accurate throughout a plant's long life. The tone is straightforward and non-mathematical, making complex documentation practices accessible to readers new to process control while providing practical details for experienced practitioners. Review: Great reference from student to professional level, easy read. - Liked logical sequence of content that leads reader clearly through 8 fully explained steps from process flow through loop diagrams. Authors broad experience in multiple fields provides meaningful insight as to why P&IDs tend to look the same but differ according to company policy and professional preferance, issues that tend to complicate contractor, professional, and vendor communities. This is an easy read for a somewhat complicated subject, most professional publications tend to overemphasize the minucia, this book treats the concepts with a very practical and sometimes humerous pen. Review: Clear explanations - This book is a very nice and concise way to describe ISA 5.1. I've used it to clarify some decisions when I redline P&IDs for midstream gas processing facilities. I would still recommend that the reader acquire ISA 5.1 for reference. Another good standard would be ISA 5.4 "Instrument Loop Diagrams".

A worthwhile read thus far!
Just started reading this book to enhance my knowledge and find this book very informative and a worthwhile read. I am already fairly knowledgeable about most of it, but this book helps me to enhance my knowledge skills and fill in a few gaps. I recommend it.

Excellent reference, and unlike a lot of text books, is geared well towards industry. It's a short book, but is filled very densely with information.
