Another great book from Gail Gibbons
I would say Gail Gibbons is one of my top authors for kids science books! I purchased this book for a weather homeschooling unit my little one (kindergarten age) was working on. The pictures are beautiful and each page was crammed with awesome information about snow and how it is formed, as well as how different communities deal with snow storms and snow related sports . My daughter loved this book so much it made it into her book basket and even in summer we are still reading this one. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a great non-fiction book on the science of snow!

Let it snow...
It's Snowing is another triumph from reknowned non-fiction picture book author Gail Gibbons, certain to be an instant classic. This volume covers everything one could ever want to know about snow in a very basic and accessible way. With clear, colorful watercolor illustrations, Gibbons takes us through the condensation cycle. Maps of where snow falls around the globe are followed by close-up pictures of snow on each continent. I especially enjoyed the several pages that talk about the difference between flurries, sleet, snowstorms and blizzards. How communities deal with snowstorms, as well as various kinds of snow-related sports including skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing and snowshoeing are shared. The book is appended with advice on how to stay warm in the snow, as well as snow-related trivia. The genius of the book is that it is so simple and yet so comprehensive, on a subject that many adults might find self-explanatory, but young children will find fascinating. Highly recommended for all elementary science collections, this is a fine addition to Gibbons' amazing body of work.

This is an excellent introduction to the interesting phenomenon of snow and what it's all about ...
A dog slides down a snowbank as children hold their hands aloft as the snow begins to fall. They have on warm clothing, including things like mittens, gloves, scarves, earmuffs, and boots. Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley "was the first person to take pictures of snowflakes," but just how were they formed and what do they look like? If you had them under some form of magnification you would never find any two alike and could easily note that each one has "either six sides or six points." Believe it or not, snow does fall around the world on all seven continents. The clouds that you see up in the winter sky are made when water evaporates from an assortment of water sources as it "rises and cools."These clouds are made up of water droplets. When the temperature drops, these droplets freeze and when several "frozen droplets join together [they] form an ice crystal." Ice crystals come in an assortment of shapes and sizes and you'll be able to take a look at some of them in the pages of this book. When they bump into one another they "join together to create a snowflake." You'll also learn how snowflakes get larger, you'll see some places where snow falls, how snow falls in "different ways" (flurries, sleet, a snowstorm, and a blizzard) and what happens when they fall, you'll learn about dangerous conditions, emergency preparedness, how to stay warm outside, and you'll learn many other interesting things about snow. This is an excellent introduction to the interesting phenomenon of snow and what it's all about. The information is set in picture book format, one that will help the emergent and newly independent readers by making it more exciting. For many, snow is of very high interest, but this book also gives scientific and meteorological information in a fun and fascinating manner. The crisp artwork helps visually differentiate between everything from a few flurries to a blizzard. In the back of the book, the text continues by pointing out ways children can stay warm, be prepared, how they can experiment by seeing snowflakes close up, it offers up some fun facts about snow, and has a couple of recommended websites to explore. This is an excellent book to add to homeschool and classroom shelves!
