I BELIEVE
I LOVE this book! The story is true. Virginia was 8 years old, and the response to her question, “Is there a Santa Claus?” was published in 1897 in the Sun. Francis P. Church answered her question. His words were beautiful, eloquent, and I tear up every year. It truly touches my heart. The illustrations are gorgeous.I BELIEVE.The book is large thus big & small hands can hold. it. The illustrations & words are large also. I buy it for newborns not that they understand, but parents can read aloud. I know infants love to hear their voices. Perhaps 5 year olds will understand the story. I have purchased 6 books so far along with 6 of The Night before Christmas…both are called The Classic Edtion. It’s all about making traditions.

Beautiful book
This was a beautiful book. It was larger than it appeared in the picture. It was a perfect gift for a friend named, "Virginia!" Would highly recommend and would buy again.

Wonderful book
This is a wonderful book that fits the letter response and the story perfectly. I can't believe it took me so long to find this in the first place.

"A perfect philosophy of life"
Journalist Francis P Church was a veteran of American Civil war reporting when he was asked one day by his editor to write an editorial based on a child's letter that had been knocking around the New York Sun's office for weeks. Virginia O'Hanlan, aged eight, asked whether Santa Claus existed. "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus," he replied. "He exists as much as love and generosity and devotion exist..." It was published on November 24, 1897, well down the editorial page, after articles on long-forgotten political issues of the day. But Church's reply struck a nerve and readers kept requesting a reprint. Eventually the Sun reprinted it every Christmas until the paper folded in 1950; and today it is the most reprinted newspaper editorial in the Western world. It's an ingenious and memorable argument that is much more famous in America than over here; and this large edition has imaginative, evocative full-page illustrations. Don't take it on a long train journey - it's too bulky and you'll have finished it before the train leaves the station - and I have no idea what a child would make of it. But for a Christmas-loving, book-collecting adult like me, it's ideal.PS The incident seems to have affected Virginia's career: she became a headmistress who pioneered the teaching of sick children (surely Santa would have approved?) After her retirement, by which time she had seven grabdchildren, she read her letter on radio one Christmas Eve and told the interviewer: "The older I grow, the more I realise what a perfect philosophy of life (the article) is." Indeed.
