Well packaged, easy to change the code, seems solid
This keysafe is perhaps slightly bigger than I needed, but it arrived well packaged and seems solid. If you just want to secure something like a Yale key then a smaller version of the keysafe would probably do the job just as well. It would have been useful if the product specification had said that it needed to be fitted to a straight surface (e.g. a brick wall) but I guess that would be true for all similar products. The surface that I needed to fix this to was constructed of uneven stones, so I had to search for a stone that was reasonably flat … which I eventually did. It was fairly easy to secure the lock to the wall using the plugs and screws provided. I didn’t initially notice the little key hook that was in the bag with the plugs & screws, so had to detach and then re-attach the keysafe, but that was easily done. Changing the default code was easy. This seems a good lock, and I hope that it will provide many years of service.

Comparison to the Masterlock XL
Arrived today, so took some time to compare to the my existing MasterLock XL. First glance they look similar but when you spend a bit of time, the differences become quite clear. Size wise they are basically the same, bar a mm hear and there, the master lock weighs at 40g heavier. Looking at the rear, the master lock has 9 rivets and 2 screws, the Rhino uses just 8 rivets. Door, the master lock has a 4mm thick cast metal door with a second high quality 1mm steel internal skin, the Rhino just uses the same 4mm cast metal door and skips any secondary internal skins. While breaking into the masterlock XL the outer cast metal broke off after a few attempts, but the inner skin held and did prevent me from opening the key box for 2 more minutes. On the inside of the door the Master lock has 10mm tabs spread along the length, which would prevent keys being fished out even if the door was bend outwards but the lock hadn’t yet failed. The Rhino has a small lip on the inside which is only 5mm falling to 3mm towards the bottom. The same with the rest of the cabinet, the master lock has both an outer and inner skin, the Rhino only has an outer skin. Which while weaker does provider a for slightly roomer interior. The Masterlock has 4 drilled holes for mounting, the Rhino has 5 although it comes supplied with 4 screws and plugs. The base of the Masterlock XL is a very tight fit, with the door extending a few mm longer, the shorter Rhino does leave a few mm gap that a screwdriver could fit in, however the pin is Pretty strong and it would take more force to snap, than a typical screwdriver could handle. Now for the good, the black finish is very smart, the combination is noticeable smoother in operation than any Masterlock I’ve found yet. Finally, Rhino has fixed one of the biggest issues on these types of key safes, they have added in a 15mm metal strip at the bottom of the key compartment. If you have ever used one of these style of key safes before you will be aware that the locking mechanism takes up the top 1/4 of the internal compartment so for larger keys you end up having to set them on the bottom, and they tend to slide or fall out, when you try and close the door as there is nothing there to hold them in place, this 15mm strip makes using the safe MUCH easier. So my verdict, the Rhino is a nice little robust key box, which is more user friendly than the MasterLock XL with a much smoother combination and that retainer at the bottom will greatly stop frustrations of keys falling out or jamming the door from closing, however if security is more of a concern over usability the Masterlock construction is more robust, but it’s worth pointing out that even a lay person with a screw driver and hammer can get into either of these in under 10 mins anyway.

Seemed the best at this price
Fitted for my parents who have carers in and out. Easy to fit and use. Placed inside outer door so basically inbetween sets of doors. They feel much more secure with one inner door locked all the time. I can’t comment on weatherproofing. I suspect some wd40 every few months would be a good idea, but mine is fitted out of direct weather. The box seems well constructed. A shame there isn’t a version with bigger numbers but it’s the carers who use it and they are quite used to using these key safes. Very happy with this extra level of security.

Large enough for key fobs
We had to buy these because the first ones we bought were too small to fit electric key fobs We've only had the Rhino key safes a few weeks but they seem to be sturdy, weatherproof and most important of all, have masses of space inside.
