Our go-to guidebook series for all the Hawaiian Islands. You can tell that the author and his team have put a ton of work into researching and developing this book. We found that most of the beaches, hikes, and activities that the guidebook recommends directly coincide with what the locals recommend and what we discovered from our own personal experience. We really appreciated the guidebook’s tiered rating system for beaches, classifying only some as “A Real Gem.” There are so many beaches on Kauai, we wanted to ensure that we didn’t waste any time going to just okay beaches and this book helped immensely with that. Also appreciated the brutal honesty of this book: the authors are very frank in their reviews and are not afraid to tell you if a certain restaurant or tour group is not worth your time. After a week in Kauai, we left feeling confident that we had done all the best things that Kauai has to offer.

We have these guidebooks for each of the Hawaiian islands and use them as our "bible" for exploration. Great reviews and recommendations. So thorough and written in an entertaining format. No other book even comes close. We've bought several updated copies over the years for each of our trips to the islands. This time, we also purchased the app. It was very useful, particularly for Covid updates. I wish that I could find guidebooks this perfect for everywhere I travel.

We visit Kauai once every 1-2 years. This continues to be the only guidebook we reference for our trips. I left our book somewhere on our last trip, so just purchased it again and am so impressed with the up-to-date revisions by the author. This book is PACKED with color photos and maps - unbelievable that the cost for a full color book is so low! You will have a wonderful time reading about the history of the island as your drive around - it is rich in information, folk lore, fun facts and recommendations. If you are even thinking of visiting the islands, buy "The Ultimate (name of island) Guidebook" now. Why not? Cost is right and you'll learn a ton even if you don't go.

We just returned from Kauai and this guidebook was very helpful. This was our second, week-long visit there, and we will be returning. It truly is one of the most beautiful places on earth. We appreciated the historical information provided. It really is important to understand this island and its diverse population. The guides for activities and dining by sections of the island are very helpful. There is a lot to see and do on Kauai, and it takes some time to travel from place to place. It is very important to study up before you go. We didn't use a guide for our first visit, and it was much better this time to have read up in advance.

About the beaches, we went on Sep 8th 2021 to the Larson beach, It was very hidden and only males with no clothes were snorkeling or swimming there. Beach was also very rough and there was a sign on the tree saying this beach had already taken 13 lives. It is not worth visiting this place if you are with a family. May be good for young couples or guys.. It was very secluded and had to walk around a mile through the shrubs and no clear walk path.

We have been traveling to the islands yearly for the past 30 years. We love them. They are our home away from home and a part of who we are now. We have purchased every Andrew Doughty guidebook and are now working on getting all the apps. He is the real gem and offers visitors a tremendous gift. We have gone on hidden adventures, explored hiking trails and beaches, and been the only people relaxing in a queens bath. We’ve laughed at his witty humor as we’ve learned a great deal about the history, culture and tremendous beauty of the islands and developed a deeper respect for the Hawaiian people and their land because of him. He guides us to the best places to eat, sleep, hike, swim, and see. We are indebted to him. Never met him or his wife but we feel they are our dear friends because of all he has given us with his guidebooks. We will be forever grateful!

This is a comprehensive guide written in a fun style that details all the offerings on Kuaui. Attractions, hiking recommendations, places to see, restaurants, along with the history of the island are featured. (Other guides by the same authors feature the other main Hawaiian Islands.) We are going to the Big Island in just a few weeks and will have this book with us everywhere we go. A waterproof cover will keep it nice for us I’m sure. There is also a companion app you can download that you can use in conjunction with the book if you wish.

This guide book is full of useful and interesting info. The mile-by-mile play-by-play of things to see and do is better than any other guide book.
