Stiff Eye Mask
I purchased this to replace a Bucky that I purchased many many years ago, and found this one to be very stiff, as in the whole plane of the mask that covers your eyes feels like there's cardboard or something in it. They've also changed the angle of the band that goes around your head to slope up so it's not going across the back of your head, but unfortunately, while it keeps it from being layed on, it slips off your head constantly. I will continue to use my old one and keep this as a backup.

Lights out
As someone who is quite sensitive to light when sleeping, I have tried a variety of methods to block it out. This is particularly important as I take frequent 3-hour bus rides in the early a.m. and semi-frequent international flights. My bedroom has an east-facing window and lots of light comes in as the sun rises. The best thing I've found when sleeping at home is to throw a T-shirt over my face. When traveling, however, this isn't always particularly practical or fashionable.I give the Bucky shades a high mark. They sit comfortably on my face and do a good job of keeping the light out. I usually need to spend some time tweaking the adjustable strap so that it doesn't bother me. When sleeping at home I sometimes just lay the shades over my face so the velcro closure doesn't create a bothersome bump where my head hits the pillow. With long hair, it's always a worry that the shades will mess it up. But I have always found them worth the trade off.If sleeping with a T-shirt over your face is not a good option, and you are tired of light leaking through the bottom of cheap airplane eye masks, give these a try. I'm happy I went ahead and purchased them after a few years spent lusting after them. The black color is a true black.Does anyone know if these are washable?

Well... this is definitely the best of the lot and it works terrifically!
I had a Buckeye shade that I bought 8 years ago to use while I was flying back & forth across the Atlantic. Recently, in the apartment I rent -- the owners pulled down the old vertical blinds which did a pretty good job of blacking out the sun and replaced them with cheap ones that did nothing. This was a problem because my bedroom, which has wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows with no break for 75 feet, faces due east on the 30th floor of the only high-rise in that direction. In the late spring and summer the sun rises to shine directly into my expansive window waking me up before 6:00 AM every morning -though I don't get to bed before midnight. Because of the particular window system, it was not possible to install blackout shades or curtains (which would have cost $1500 if it were possible.)Desperate, I looked for my Buckeyes hoping they would help but couldn't find them. Even more desperate, I discovered that Amazon sold them -- but Amazon sold others that were more highly rated by a larger number of people: Lewis n' Clark Comfort Eye and Sweet Dreams Contoured Sleep Mask. Since the latter two were really cheap, I bought both along with the expensive Buckeyes. The Sweet Dreams did not have the cushion below the eyes to block at light and so were worthless. I do not see how they get so highly rated!?! The Lewis N Clark do have that cushion but are not well-enough constructed to let your eyes move uninterrupted which is critical for deep sleep -- getting your REM (rapid eye movement.) But I have very long eyelashes and that is part of the problem. Plus it slid off during the night. But the Buck Eye Shades worked like a charm, It took a few nights to figure out how to fit it on my head properly (pulling down the cushion below my eyes to stay there -- and the right tightness and placement of the band around the back of my head) -- but it blocked out the sun completely, left plenty of space under the mask for my eyes and eyelashes (which are quite long) to remain untouched -- and it did not come off my head -- even though I am a stomach sleeper and move around a lot at night. So don't waste your money on the others -- even though they are a lot cheaper -- they just don't work or work as well.If the Buck Eye worked in my circumstances, they will work in anyone's.So get the Buckeyes -- they are worth every penny. Your sleep quality and quantity is the single most important thing you can do for your health. On the other hand, the Sweet Dreams mask is very silky & sexy and a really good item if you're into those kinds of experiences ;-) I would buy it for that :-)Update: I just bought 2 more of the Bucky Eye Shades -- a back-up for me (for when I can't find one) and one for my partner -- though he likes the Sweet Dreams too.

Straps too Sharp
The body of the mask is okay, kind of heavy and hot, but the straps are very heavy fabric, stiff, and the edges are sharp. I had the black Bucky and its straps were much softer and more flexible. I won't use this blue one anymore with the sharp straps.

Bucky - consistant quality for over 15 years
I've worn sleep masks for more than fifteen years. I've tried many brands but always come back to the Bucky Eye Shades. They maintain comfort longer than any other mask. As claimed, they are totally light blocking if worn properly. Since you can adjust them to your own head size/comfort level, they stay in place without hurting your ears.I have a nine year old model that we've kept for the rare times my husband needs a sleep mask. While it's not as padded any longer it still totally blocks light and is comfortable enough for a few nights use. I usually replace my Bucky every three years, wanting one of the newer colors. My old Bucky ends up as a hand-me-down to friends who get another few years use out of it. We keep the nine year old mask because the front is a type of fabric we like that is no longer offered. They recommend you hand wash your Bucky Eye Shades. While I've gone that route a few times, I usually just throw it in the washing machine and dryer. I've never had a problem and the nine year old mask has been in the washer at least a hundred times. You do have to make sure the Velcro is fastened to itself and that it doesn't wrap around other clothes and snag or break the hook and loop. A lingerie bag works beautifully. While the included ear plugs aren't the greatest - being too large and hard to fit my ear comfortably while falling asleep - the pocket makes a handy storage place for your own, higher quality noise-blocking ear plugs. I've also used it as a convenient storage place for a small bit of money on a plane. It stops me from pulling out my whole purse for a few dollars. The only problem with this wonderful mask is it can be overly warm to wear in the summer months. This is true of the fun fur, cotton velour and the older sateen polyester. Unfortunately, I've yet to find a lightweight mask as comfortable and fully light blocking as the Eye Shades.
