Word by Word Picture Dictionary with WordSongs Music CD

This book was one of the required textbooks for my husband's ESL college course for beginners, and one day he showed it to my mom (who also does not speak English but wants to learn). She was really excited to see all of the pictures describing the vocab because it was easier to understand. She is almost 60 years old and cannot stare at pages and pages of text - the big colorful illustrations are better for her. So we ordered one for her through Amazon Prime, it arrived really quickly (I think less than 2 days?) and she really loves it! There is even a CD in the back of the book that she now listens to in the car when she's running errands. Each chapter is filled with vocabulary lists that correspond to the many, many drawings on each page. Like the title says, it is a *picture dictionary*, so you won't see a lot of text or writing practice exercises. But that's okay for my mom, who prefers this simpler layout and takes notes and practices on her own separate notebook anyway. The lessons are catered to beginners of ESL, and provides really practical word lists that directly relate to everyday life (chores, food, health, leisure, etc). Definitely recommend for beginners who respond better to visual aids!

I am using the Word by Word dictionary to supplement my ESL program with my begging ESL adult students. The pictures are overwhelming when you first see them but they become easier to understand if you teach each number at a time. Students enjoy using it.

This book is excellent. It's very usefull learn vocabulary seeing the images. I reccommend it 100% to all English students. I bought this item in Amazon because I feel more safe with them, it was easy track the package, I receive the package on time and the packing was very good. I LOVE this CD for the music used to teach adult ESL! There was a CD that provided worksheets that went along with each song in a 2006 or 2007 version I borrowed from a school's store room. ( We can't find it now) I wish this purchase had included the extra CD with worksheets I know exists somewhere with the songs. That's what I had expected to get in one package.... The songs alone are great, but now I have to make up my own vocabulary/grammar practice sheets to go with each song. Also, this purchase does NOT include the lyrics to each song; ONLY the music to the songs is shipped on one CD. If anyone knows where I can find the second CD that goes with these songs and provides practice sheets and lyrics for each song, I would love to find that ISBN number!! I think for 25 dollars I should have received both CDs.

This dictionary is useful for children and adults who are learning English. It's a slim book, so easy to carry in a bookbag for quick reference. The pictures are colorful and there is a helpful index in the back of the book to quickly locate pictures. In addition to the index, items are grouped according to context so that students can flip through to find a kitchen, beach, etc. picture for individual items.

The book is used as a resource by my wife for instructing English as a Second Language to immigrants with very low language skills. She finds the material helpful in the early stages before they can use the roman alphabet to get the rudiments of English words verbally with good pictorial connections to the meaning of the spoken word.

A great picture dictionary for people who are learning English as a second language, the colorful images are just wonderful. The way the book is organized is proper and easy to follow. Thumbs up!
