Yikes? It's Art. It's History.
I have several Taschen art books. This is a great coffee table book. It is both art (street photography) and history (of NYC). Excellent reproductions - all things considered. Great selection of pictures. Gives a feeling of what NYC was like 100, 75 and 50 years ago. Shows great photography if you're into that kind of thing (which I am). Also, can be used defensively to knock attackers silly, as it weighs almost 10 lbs.

If you love NYC, you'll love this book
Whether you live in NYC or whether you love the city from afar, the selection of photos in this book is superb. Reuel Golden chose carefully, including photos from well-known photographers as well as relative unknowns. Some of the photos are easily recognized, but others feature different sights in this "photographers' paradise" city. I also love the graphic illustrations, as they truly add to the overall enjoyment. As an aside, the book is quite hefty - but that's all to the better, given the extensive contents.

Great Social History
I could not put this boook down! The pacing conveys the drama and frenetic energy of the city through the last century and a half, and manages to be both photogrphic and social history at once. While not shying away from documenting the city's well-known rough edges (particularly during the crisis years of the 70s), I also found the book to convey a deep respect and love for New York. Love it!

Makes a for a thoughtful and luxurious gift
I purchased this oversized coffee table book for as a gift for a friend who loves New York and it was such a hit! It is very heavy and the photos are gorgeous. My friend who received it thought it was such a luxurious gift - the type of thing that you love showing off in your home, but may not think to buy yourself. These Taschen city books may be one of my go-to gifts for now on.

New York i love you!
I really enjoy this book, it's beautiful, with a great compilation of pictures, but i also have to say that the picture quality it's not good enough because of the over expouse contrast in almost every picture. Anyway its a highly recommended book

The New York of all the great movies
A magnificent, fascinating, beautiful photographic portrait of New York. Anyone who is a fan of the imagery of painter Edward Hopper, film makers Scorsese & Coppola, writer Scott Fitzgerald, and many others like these will recognise the city streets and architecture and the lives of New Yorkers as captured by some of the great photographers over 120+ years. A thick image packed book with great paper and image reproduction. I have spent hours pouring over these pictures in complete absorption and transportation to another place and time. Would make a great gift to anyone!
