Inexpensive temporary solution

I needed some lathe tools quickly and my Sorby set was packed away in one of a hundred moving boxes taking way too long to locate. I purchased this set and on arrival found them to be of reasonable quality for the price. As a stop gap these chisels will do the job, i much prefer my Sorby tools which have much, much longer handles making cutting and control of the chisel easier to maneuver and more precise. They need to be sharpened on receipt and that is to be expected of any chisel and they don't seem to hold an edge as well as the Sorby chisels but again you get what you pay for and the Sorbys are more than 5 times the price.

Good kit for beginner with grinding skills

I gave this 5 stars for the value, not because I "loved it." I'm a beginning wood turner, and this kit got me started. It is plenty good enough for medium-size bowls and most spindle work. The pros:--good basic selection (although not a comprehensive beginner's selection);--good thick HSS steel holds up well if edge is not ground too fine;--The handles fit my hands well, full and nicely shaped;--excellent value for the money. As someone else mentioned, this whole kit costs less than most Sorby tools. The cons:--The factory grinds are kinda rough and need touching up and maybe even regrinding the edges. This might also be a plus, because it forces beginners to learn how to grind a tool, which is a lot different from "sharpening."--The box, as noted many times, is indeed flimsy as well as awkward and clumsy to use as ready-to-hand tool storage. But this might also be a plus if it encourages building a tool rack, which is a much more convenient way to store the tools.I continue to buy PSI tools despite their limited selection of edges because the tools and the steel are good enough that an experienced hand can regrind a standard tool (square flute to fingernail, for instance) at a fraction of the cost of buying one of the many "name brands" that offer dozens of styles and specialized grinds.

Got the job done

I'm new to turning, but not building furniture, so when I needed to turn some legs for a piece of furniture, I had to take the plunge and get a lathe, grinder, tools... the whole sha-bang. I didn't want to spend a fortune on any of these items, so I got a Jet 12-36 on sale, a Rikon slow speed grinder, and these tools.I am very pleased with these tools. I am no turning expert, but I was able to make 4 matching legs in short order using just these tools. If I was turning bowls, I don't know if I'd have everything I needed, but for my spindle turning needs, these worked perfectly. I used all of these in one was during the turning of the legs, so I think this is a good assortment for a beginner or moderate woodworker who wants to learn to turn, and even turn for profit. They got me up and running, and I'm very pleased. Note these are also known as Benjamin's Best, and PSI stands for Penn State Industries. They aren't perfect tools (some of the steel isn't perfectly in line with the handle, like the tang wasn't pressed into the handle straight) but they were excellent for me.

Good basic set

After a lot of research I picked up this set. These are not the best as the others have said but I dont think you'll find a better set under $100.Cons:The handles and box feel cheap. The HSS seems to be softer than most other cutlery HSS I've handled. As a result they need to be sharpened more frequently. The edge is very quick to get a sharpening burr. If you're not familiar with the proper procedure for removing a burr you'll need to look it up. As a result quick passes over the bench grinder with a jig are not sufficient to make a lasting edge. The factory edges are pretty poor.Pros:The handles are a great length which provides plenty of leverage and are not loose.Since the HSS is soft it takes a new edge very quickly. All 6 tools can be brought to hair popping sharp in about 10 mins with a couple of bench stones.Once sharpened they work almost as well as my carbide tools. Nearly effortless cutting for much longer than I would expect from cheap HSS. (After putting a very fine edge with a set of bench stones)Price is about half of what other sets of similar caliber sell for.I dont think you'll find a better set on amazon. If I were to upgrade from this set I'd buy a full set of carbide tools but I dont use them enough to warrant the 3 or 4 fold price increase.

OK beginner's set of gouges.

These are not all that great, but they work, mostly. Good set for the beginner trying to learn how to sharpen gouges. After gaining experience and skills, spend the money and upgrade to some quality gouges from USA or UK.

Good enough for a newbie

I just recently got into wood turning and this set is what I need to begin with my  Steel City Tool Works 60170G Granite 5 Speed Mini Lathe .The handles feel a little sturdy but are well connected to the blade (maybe I'll start turning my own handles). The case gave me a cheap feeling, and opens on the wrong side, but well enough to keep them organized and protected.Good price. As D.Tappan said: "Overall, the few minor problems are outweighed by its pros. It is a good set, includes all that you need to get going, they feel sturdy and hold an edge well. And they are cheap to boot."

Free scrap wood with your purchase!

The tools themselves are fine for the price and I don't regret buying them. The case that the chisels come in is a joke, though. Mine arrived with all of the wooden partitions broken and the chisels floating loosely inside the case. There are some nicks and scrapes on the tools, but no damage worth the hassle of a returning them. Thanks to PSI for the junk scrap wood... More wood for the fire.

These are Benjamin's Best chisels, a decent starter set

These chisels came branded "Benjamin's Best" on the handle, and the steel is marked as M2 HSS.There are plenty of reviews for Benjamin's Best turning tools on various forums, so I think that it would be helpful if the brand were included in the item description.I am a beginner turner, so I don't feel qualified to evaluate the steel quality or the profiles of the chisels. I can say that the handles are a bit sketchy, the holes into which the tools' tangs are inserted are very large and rough, and the ferrules are set with a huge dimple on the side, which makes me think that the wood could be split under the ferrules when the big dimple is added. The finish quality on the handles is not so great, there are many rough spots in the finish. The wooden storage box is also flimsy, but who needs it anyway. All this said, I think that for the price you are paying for this set, it is a good buy. And turning new handles can be your first practice project at the lathe. If you have no turning tools at all, this set will give you something to play with and perhaps develop a sense of what chisels you'll end up using the most, at which point you can make an informed decision of buying higher quality tools.

Superb set of tools for new turners!

Fantastic starter kit for new turners. When you often pay this much for one tool, this kit is ideal for learning how to sharpen, shape and learn the use of multiple techniques from bowl making to spindle turning. The long handles are excellent for stability and teaching the ABC’s of turning (angle/bevel/cut) would recommend over and over.

Extreamly good wood turning tools

These tools are an excellent quality (especially for the price). I have used them to turn hundreds of chess pieces, wands, and mallet handles and they hold up admirably. The really big pokey one is the best.
