A wonderful confection
LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book! A little wierd, but I read a romance and a horror story just before reading this yet Bliss, sweet, magical and middle grade, rocked my socks off. It was funny and immensely enjoyable, a wonderful confection of a story. Just the first page alone, where mother Bliss is folding lightning into a batter for a cookie recipe pulled me in with its imagination and plain, old good storytelling. There were so many scenes where I was just laughing out loud as I read.I loved middle kid Rose, so responsible and desperate to stand out from the rest of her family (which is one of those fictional families I wish I had). Every character in fact is remarkably written and distinct. I can still "see" each one as I'm writing this and chuckling over all the funny scrapes and mishaps.Inventive, fantastic, funny - If it charmed an adult like me, I know that the kids would devour every scrumptious bit of this book. The title is spot on - I was very happy as I read Bliss.

Cute fantasy with disappointing ending
Loved the idea of the magical bakery with the four kids, who are kept away from the Booke. The story is told through the eyes of Rose, the second oldest child, and she feels she doesn't belong with two handsome brothers plus a precious toddler sister. She yearns not to be ordinary or plain. Kids will understand this. Her parents hide the magic cookery booke (yes, that's the spelling!) from the kids. When the folks are called away to help on a nearby emergency, Rose is excited to get to that book and show her parents she can do what they do.Along comes the mysterious, gorgeous Aunt Lily, who is obviously a member of the Bliss clan ('though with a different last name) because of the ladle tattoo on her shoulder. Things go more than chaotic with her arrival and the attempts at magic by Rose. And it's all hilarious with a tinge of menace from Aunt Lily. Strikes all the right notes.Until the last few chapters of this otherwise well-written story. Parents return. Aunt Lily has disappeared. Things must be rectified within the Bliss Magical Bakery. Yet there's something so missing from the ending. Instead of endearing and with the reader looking forward to the second book in the trilogy, this reader (quite a few decades older than the intended audience) just wants to wash her hands of the whole story. But the writing is above par, and the characters well drawn. Good clean fun. Hope that helps.

Great Book with Amazing Story!!!
This is an incredible book, great for middle schoolers and young adults. It is about a young girl, Roemary Bliss, and her family, who own a magical cookbook. One week, when Rose's parents are away, the family's sketchy "aunt" comes (SPOILER ALERT) with the intention of stealing the magic cookbook and using it for her own selfish purposes. This book has a cliffhanger ending (smart marketing) and in this book all of a young girl's insecurities and worries surface, but at the same time, she still has a happy family and humor is ever-present. Overall, great read - I highly recommend.

A Charming Debut Filled With Culinary Magic
At the Bliss family bakery, you can get cookies to help you sleep, love muffins or even truth cookies. You see, there's a little bit of magic infused in each recipe and indeed, there's magic in Kathryn Littlewood's debut novel, Bliss.Calamity Falls seems to operate perfectly and some might say it's the presence of the bakery that is the cause. The Bliss family has been in the baking business for a very long time, using enchanted recipes from the Cookery Booke, a family heirloom. The Bliss parents must leave town to deal with a flu outbreak in a neighboring city. The four children - Ty, Sage, Rose, and Leigh are left under the supervision of an elderly neighbor. Rose feels special because she's been entrusted with the key to the Cookery Booke. Not much can go wrong in the short time the parents are gone right?Sometimes books with missing parents are a treat because it works as a decent literary device for the child to explore independence. When Rose gets her first taste of independence, there is a certain thrill as she makes her first magical recipe and her first mistakes. We see Rose go against her better judgement -but then learn from the consequences. The reader will want everything to work out for Rose and her charming family as they read through Bliss.Kathryn Littlewood has written a charming debut about a tight knit family, delicious food and some culinary magic that has me starved for the next installment of the Bliss family's adventures.

For children
This book is for children (ages perhaps 9 - 15). It is written in a very simple language. I would not have bought it had I know this.Peter Wirtz
