Plug PC 2 - Just amazing.
I wanted to replace my existing 5 year old desktop for parents, which took up a lot of space with that large CPU and all that wired stuff like keyboard / mouse and other accessories. I had bought a nice FULL HD monitor an year ago, so was looking for a cheap upgrade in terms of just computing unit without monitor. I came to know of this platform called Compute Stick, which Intel released an year ago and now is upgraded with latest Atom processor. This platform is now customizable by third party vendors like RDP did in this case, I bought it from RDP website at [...]. Unboxed this little beauty which I received this week, hooked it up with my monitor and added a USB Hub connecting to the USB 3.0 port on compute stick and voila - everything works perfectly out of the box. I received a free 16 GB memory card but since I already had a 64 GB Micro SD card, I just used it as additional storage. Everything just works, it's that simple. I hooked up a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse adapter, a pen drive and a printer into USB hub - all of them are detected and work perfectly. I changed the power profile to High Performance from control panel and Intel HD graphics control panel, just to make sure I get the best computing experience. On boot, I get 33 % RAM usage which includes Avast free antivirus installed. I noticed Windows Defender using a lot more memory as default AV hence I installed avast (which automatically disable Win Defender), which is very light on memory. Boot up just takes about 12-14 seconds from cold boot. Also you get about 17 GB out of 32 GB usable space, which is good enough for few videos, applications and documents, for more usage just expand using Micro SD card. Note that the OS is genuine a genuine copy of Windows 10 Home which needs to be activated once you start for the first time. Also there are couple of Windows update waiting to be installed, so make sure you do that as well. I also installed Chrome and LibreOffice as daily productivity tools. Chrome is fast to launch (3 secs only), with average memory usage. Opening 4-5 tabs having emails, YouTube, FB etc bumps RAM usage to about 55%, yet there is NO LAG in switching between tabs or applications open. Streaming 1080p videos is a breeze, no stuttering or screen tear at all. Put up simply, it is Fast. People who think 2 GB is not enough memory, well you are right and even wrong...In my usage of about 6 hours, I did not notice a single lag - Win 10 manages memory really well. Ofcourse, if you open tons of applications then you know you are doing wrong to this device; it is meant to be a simple computing platform and should be treated like that. The built in windows media player and photo viewer apps handles all major videos, audio and photo formats, no need to install VLC, but it’s up to you if you prefer the latter. The compute stick comes with a 3 Amp power adapter, an HDMI extension cable and a usb male to female extension cable. The built in Wifi is "a/b/g/n" enabled but not "ac", doesn't matter much to me; also there is a Bluetooth 4.0 available at your disposal if you want to hook up a Bluetooth keyboard or headphones. At first boot if you have a Bluetooth keyboard / mouse, it may be of problem because just to detect those devices you need an input device to go to Bluetooth setting hence its better to purchase a wired or wireless with dongle set. Both the wireless radios work perfectly with no issues. After about 6 hours of usage, the stick get just a little warm, but not hot, and uses amazingly less power between 5 - 8 watts. I would highly recommend this compute stick to anyone who is looking to setup a cheap desktop at office or home. It's got everything built right into it and just works. Only one suggestion to RDP team that if possible try and include a headphone / mic single jack in next upgrade. I do know that this is an inherited platform from intel compute stick platform, but there is always a way. I don't really mind much because my monitor has a headphone jack which can output audio from stick and may be other users who don't have headphone out can buy cheap USB sound card.
