It wasn’t really what I expected, but it’s been good and helpful. I like that it’s theologically sound and not subjective at all. Helpful if you want to grow in understanding the Bible and can appreciate a scholarly approach.I would add I personally found having a foundation of already understanding the scripture helpful. I imagine if I was very new at being in the word I would have found this incredibly overwhelming.

This study was very helpful as I ventured through Exodus...asking thought provoking questions to meditate on and following that up with insight into the text.

An actual "study" of Exodus
Not your cut and dried study book. This one will take you into the depths of Exodus and have you search for answers.

Good questions
I like this study. Good thought provoking questions and insight into the passages I hadn't considered before. Don't agree with some of their views on election but I won't hold it against them :)

Every day language, clearly written.
The lessons are easily managed, and the text is clearly written -easily understood.

It’s okay.
It is more academic than personal. It’s a true study not a journey through the book. Really good but not what you want if you are looking for something to speak to your heart. It’s just not written that way to me.

This study was one evaluated for our Bible study group. We choose a study from Concordia Publishing House because the group felt it would better address our Missouri Lutheran Synod theological beliefs.

Solid theology in bible study book
I got the Genesis book in this series first. There is some solid theology in this series, but the authors lean heavily towards emphasizing the meta-narratives of the bible itself. What I mean is, unlike traditional bible studies that concentrate on life skills that we can learn from the life of Moses or Joshua, this book emphasizes that Exodus is actually a story of God reintroducing himself to the Israelites after a 400 year "absence" where the descendants of Jacob basically forgot about Him. Actually the patriarchs themselves only saw a very limited side of God and so God wanted to reveal more of Himself to his people. The 10 plagues and the miracles in the desert then, aren't just instances of God flexing his muscles but clues to who God is. More importantly, all of God's acts in Exodus foreshadow and provide a background to understand who Jesus is, how Jesus is supposed to save mankind, and what the ultimate goal of salvation is. The whole point of salvation isn't just to escape hell but to restore a situation where God can once again dwell with us in the "Kingdom of God."Preachers often neglect the neglect this meta-narrative in their preaching, preferring to stick to the "Jesus died on the cross as a substitute for our sins" shorthand. That's too bad, as the richness of the word (and God's truly remarkable provision to save us) is lost. So this bible study does indeed offer something new, and something richer for those willing to put the work in to understand it. You'll better understand why OT scholars believe you can't understand the NT without knowing the OT.
