I love you Devil Survivor
As a big fan of Devil Survivor especially the first game, I was excited for this book for months. All the thoughts I had of what could be in this book were shot when I went through it all.Watch the other reviewers video and see if there's anything you like.A part of me is happy I got something Devil Survivor related but another part is really sad there wasn't more art especially the demons.

Beware! Less an art book, more a collection of game resources
I really enjoyed Devil Survivor for the 3DS and am a fan of the artist. (high gravity boobs on Yuzu aside...) I was super excited when I saw Udon was publishing this as I own many of their books and have come to really enjoy them. Unfortunately I'm a little disappointed that there is so much non art content in this book. This book is half way between an art book and a full on game guide, which is not something Udon typically publishes from my experience. Perhaps the book being titled 'Official Material Collection' should have tipped me off, but wow did they mean that very literally....The first 80 pages are great. Some nice full page promo art pieces, then lots of pages full of character art and sketches. All great stuff. We then get FOURTEEN pages that do nothing but reproduce the text from all the emails you get in the game. Who really wants that collected in a book? I certainly don't. We then get a 32 page chunk of the book devoted to the Demons. I was excited because I was expecting to see some high res demon art, but that was nowhere to be found. Instead we get a postage stamp sized graphic of each demon, accompanied by a wall of text. This includes all of their quotes throughout the game. Another chunk that really comes off as just material to increase page count.Beyond that we move to the environments. This section is an improvement because we do get to see all of the environments and their time of day variants. But they are still rather small on the page. I would have much preferred to have the prior two sections removed and instead devote full pages to some of these environments.Anyway, I mainly post this as a word of warning to those of you that may be looking at this as a full on art book like most of Udons other releases. If so, you may or may not be satisfied. Another review here flips through the book, so take a look at that and get an idea if this books is for you. As for me, I'm going to have to sell this one and import the two 'Shooting Star' books from Japan. http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/switch-language/product/4063648583/ref=dp_change_lang?ie=UTF8&language=en_JP

I enjoy it because it's Devil Survivor but wasn't at all impressed by the official designs which could already be seen in-game.

Nice visual companion but could be better
The media could not be loaded. This is the concept artbook and video game visual companion to Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor. The original is the Japanese edition that was published in 2009. Udon translated this English edition. The book's a large 176-page paperback. The first part looks at the characters, the art as they appear in the game, and also the concept sketches and profile. There are bits of interesting information on the dynamics between characters that make for an interesting but brief read. Mail data from selected characters are included. The second part is the demon compendium. This section has the demons' description and the quotes when they are recruited from the Devil Auction, or when fusing. Unfortunately, there's no art in this section. The demons are just game screenshots printed rather small. It's a waste because their designs are more interesting than the human characters. The next section has the environment art which are game screenshots. It shows several icon places in Japan as adapted for the game. Included is a small photo reference from real life, followed by the game art, and of the places in different phases of contamination. The text talks about the different events that happen there. Since it's game screenshots, the resolution isn't that great which is why they aren't printed that big.The last part has more miscellaneous art such as storyboards, cutscenes. It ends with an interview with the creators, namely director Shinjiro Takada, scenario writer Yoh Haduki, art director Akiko Kotoh and character designer Suzuhito Yasuda. As a game companion, it provides insight especially to the design of the game and characters. It could have been a better book with demon concept art added, and source graphic files for the environment.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog.
