CompactXR – Outdoor Thermal Imaging Camera for iOS, Black (LT-AAA)

Now I may be biased as I've been waiting for a price effective thermal camera for years. But I don't need it enough to pay more than $300. I searched the web thoroughly before I decided what to buy. I considered the Flir One and Therm-App and read all I could about them as well. The first thing I noticed was that temperature range is way better on the Seek. Thermal-App can't detect high and low temperatures (from 5°C to +90°C (41°F to +194°F)) so that limits the usefulness for me and the price is quite high (almost 6 times the Seek). Flir doesn't go subzero at all (32 °F to 212 °F (0°C to 100°C)) So with (much) better range and a good price the choice was easy (I live way up north and intended to use it outside some of the time and it actually gets that cold here sometimes) When I got the camera I liked the retail packaging. Feels as a good product even before you open it. (My seal was broken by Amazon for "inspection purposes" - I expect someone couldn't help themselves to try it out - I'm not complaining and I understand - hope you had fun). The camera was much smaller than I had anticipated (I knew the specs but never thought of size as an issue). The carrying case was sturdy and watertight (I removed the camera and held the case under 2 feet of water for 45 minutes without any leaks - I floats by the way also with the camera inside). The camera itself felt rough as well, nice magnesium body and very light. There's no instructions what so ever other than to get the app and plug in the camera. The app has a reasonable size and I had downloaded it before I got the camera. If you buy directly from Seek you will have to setup an account (I got cameras directly from Seek and from Amazon). When you attach the camera you can setup another account (not the same as the one you setup for a buy). And if you want to ask questions on their support site - you've guessed it - you have to setup a third account. If you worry about privacy don't setup accounts just press an extra button when you start the app to accept the terms of use. I use a wallet type case for my phone and had no problem fitting the Seek without the case getting in the way. It seated just fine. I realize that this may not be the case (no pun intended) with all case types but depends on design of your specific type of case. First thing I realized using the camera was that 20° FOV (Field Of View) is very narrow. I had to keep my distance from objects if I wanted an overview of things. It was the cause of a little irritation to begin with but now I'm used to it and it works fine both indoors and outdoors. It's not that I have to stand 20 feet away as other reviewers has claimed. I was able to take reasonable pictures in a small room 6 × 6 feet. Next thing was the software. It's not intuitive at all. Often you have to look for the right button and while in changing settings you have to go through 2 steps to get back before you can take a picture or movie (not sound on the movies by the way - but you know that if you read the specs). That is a constant source of irritation together with the fact that some controls switch places and gets mirrored when the camera (phone) tilts. I hope an update will change that one day (updates can update your camera's firmware by the way). The focus lens (not a zoom lens) works as expected. I've successfully focused on objects as close as 4 inches and as far as 1500 feet. On short ranges a picture can get very detailed because of the good resolution. On a distance it makes a difference as to how small and how far you can detect a heat source. Pictures from afar does not get sharp but you would know that if you researched just a little (you still "only" have 32,000 measuring points). Focusing on most objects with just a little texture shows how accurate this camera is. It's possible to get very detailed pictures. Most low resolution thermals produce blurry picture and Flir introduced the msx technology to outline the picture so you can see what it was you took a picture of, but in most cases the Seek pictures are very clear and objects are easily distinguished. Provided there's enough contrast in temperatures. Therm App (384 × 288 gives more than 110,000 temperature measurements in a picture) has a higher resolution than Seek but as mentioned the price is way up and temperature detection is much narrower than the Seek. I bought an extension cable for my camera because I'm lazy and won't bother to get out of my car. I can hold the camera out the window and it works fine. It can be a little difficult to point but it does work. Only thing you have to take in to account is that the app orient itself according to the phones position and not the cameras. (You can take pictures that shows upside down on your computer, but even native programs on any Mac or pc can easily turn them). I wrote to Seek regarding EXIF and thermal data in the pictures. There's no data stored with the pictures and what you see is what you get (other companies saves thermal data with pictures thus making it possible to process the pictures later on a computer - change the color scheme for instance). Seek wrote to me that they might update firmware later to include this data witch would be a major improvement but not necessarily something all users need. In the settings you can change what temperature scale to use (Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin). Aspect ratio can be set to 4:3 or 16:9. The first will utilize more of the thermal sensor and the latter fits better on modern screens (but be advised that what really happens is that the 4:3 picture is cut to fit) It's possible to ad watermarks to your pictures. You'll find 3 options in the settings: "Date & Time", Location and Seek Logo. They can be chosen individually and the fact that you can turn off the Seek Logo is a plus (not possible on Flir cameras - don't know about Therm App).. The date, time and location is taken from your phone so if the date or time is off so will the watermark be. If your location on the phone is turned off you won't be able to get a precise location on the picture (I don't know why I have to tell you this but apparently not all think about this) The camera I heavily relying on the phones cpu and that's what keeps the price down. The software allows you to change between 9 different color palettes: white, black, iron, cool, amber, indigo, tyrian, glory and envy. They will each show temperatures in a mix of gradient and different colors. I've found that the same motive can be more or less clear/obvious depending on the palette used. it's possible to have the temperature shown on the picture either in spot mode (temperature measured and shown in the middle of the picture) and High/Low mode where highest and lowest temperature within the frame is shown. There is a search mode where you can have the camera highlight temperatures higher, lower or exactly a given temperature. In the thermal+ mode you can use the camera together with the phones camera and slide between the 2. If you double press on the normal picture you'll be able to zoom and pan the picture so it fits the thermal picture. With a little practice the 2 pictures can be lined up to almost perfection a feature that is very useful. When you take a picture in this mode 2 pictures will be saved to the phone. An ordinary and a thermal. Within the app you can still slide between the two but that is not the case when you export the pictures or see them in your phones image viewer (goes without saying, but still saying it) If you take the picture in one of the temperature modes the temperature will be shown on both pictures. All in all I'm very satisfied with this camera. I have both ios and android version and this review goes for both. Only difference I've noted is that the ios version seems to fit firmer in the phone and can be set both ways in the phone. For the android version, on a phone with the micro usb turned the "wrong" way a small cable works fine. The narrow field of view can be irritating at first but when you get used to it it's not a problem. I'd say that the fixed focus on the regular version would be a greater source of irritation to me. Pros: price , temperature range (-40C to 330C), adjustable focus, size (smaller than expected), sturdy carrying case, build quality, app has many useful features, range of detection (from macro to long distance), ability to adjust normal and thermal picture to line up (thermal+ function) Cons: flat photos (no exif or thermal data saved with the photos, thus no possibility of tweaking the photos on computer later), fov is very narrow, (20 degrees compared to regular versions 36), app is messy and not intuitive (some controls even move around on the screen when entering functions or tilting the unit),

When I read that the others had batteries that had to be charged after an hour's use, I knew the Seek would be better for me because it uses your phone's battery. I hiked for three hours and while it drained my iPhone 11's battery to about 30% by the end (I took a lot of photos), I was prepared with a portable charger just in case. It turns out I didn't need it. I'm a herper (amateur herpetologist) and took the Seek into the desert to see if I could locate any snakes or lizards. They sometimes hide in crevices in between boulders in my area. I knew they did this because it holds heat. But until I took the Seek into the desert, I didn't realize just how much. Posted are only two of many filters. You'll see I tested one of the filters on my desktop computer that was clearly heating up the door as it vented. One photo is of the living room window. You can clearly see which window had sun exposure that time of day. I was really quite surprised at how well the plant life holds the heat during the night. It was 46 degrees when I took the saguaro photo (not the crested saguaro). All of the shrubs around it were warm, as well. Using a different filter, you can see where the crested saguaro held heat. The boulder photos were amazing to see. I knew they held heat. I could feel the temperature difference when I touched it, but to see it like this was very cool. I can't wait to go back out and explore more! I plugged the Seek into my phone and it immediately prompted me to download the software, so I did. I also watched the video Seek provided within the app. It was very helpful. I registered the product. It does ask for access to your photos, which is fine because I want the photos saved to my phone, which it does. You can see from the photos that it's a very small device. It comes with a waterproof case and a key ring so you can attach the case to wherever you like. Ignore the hair tie that I tied to the key ring, I need get a carabiner for it. On a side note, it clicks at regular intervals as it's testing the temperature and setting the image, I presume. It didn't bother me at all, it's quiet. I plan to experiment with the other filters. Well worth the money, in my opinion. It clearly has household uses, but for me, exploring nature with Seek is what's going to be fun. If you have kids, take them out with this and let them see nature in a way we don't normally get to see it. Science....let's find out!

Pros: Range is better than I expected. My son and I tested it in the dark in 25 degree weather with snow on the ground and I could still spot him from about 350 feet away. Detected temperatures seem pretty accurate and there are a lot of different modes to isolate only the warmest/coldest elements. Easy to spot deer and wildlife nearby. I car that had been shut off three hours ago still had enough residual heat visible st the engine that you could tell it had been running, even though you wouldn’t detect it by hand. Geotagging features are a nice bonus. I actually found a couple windows in my house where cold air was getting in so now I can seal those better. Cons: The camera is “zoomed in” more when using this than it would be when just using it as a camera, you don’t have as wide of a field of view. Images and video from a distance starts to get pretty grainy. Since it’s powered by the charge port it can be a bit awkward to hold your phone. You have to hold it in such a way where your hand isn’t adding heat to the image, means you can’t just hold your phone the way you normally would. I used this on an iPhone 6, X, and iPad mini. iPad was definitely the easiest device to still grip and use. Biggest con is that after about 20 minutes of continued use in cold weather, the device itself has warmed up enough to produce a “heat ring” around the image (since it’s now hotter than the air temperature around it). You can see this in one of the pics I posted below.

Customer service was really great. They worked with me when I purchased the wrong one. Everything was smooth. They are on top of it and really great to work with if you run into any problems at all. I'm happy with them. I explain below about the differences between high quality TI and this TI. It looks great if you change some settings. When you get it, I recommend going into settings and put it on 4:3 instead of 16:9. Just my opinion. Switch between them and decide for yourself. I also disabled smoothing. I think it looks better that way. It really isn't bad at all ..quite nice after you change some settings. The camera quality on that 16:98 setting just didn't seem to be very compatible and didn't work together. I'll start off by saying that on the phone there is so much more programming going on than with $3,000 TI's and I know that sounds very odd but it's true. Showing different color palates and displaying temperatures is just incredible features and really makes this device worth it over any quality discrepancies. It does look great and quite clear after changing the settings. Very close to an expensive professional one that is $3,000. Frame rate is definitely slower, looks almost like 3 frames per second *cough* versus 30 frames per second on a $3,000 one and not As Pixelated. I must add that this is going to be quittte Pixelated while the professional TI is not pixelated at all, but still quite clear on the phone. Lastly, as I was saying before ...the expensive TI has no color palates ..It's only white/black or black/white. On the phone it has an incredible feature for targeting Set temperatures and coloring while leaving everything else chrome/black/white. Really Amazing feature, Love it. Those things make this device stand out a lot.

Fairly good thermal camera for the money, incredible small unit, downside is that gradient is kinda rough, looking at a wall with stud's and heat-leak, there is very poor indication, my FLIR ONE have significantly better definition on the exact same spots. other kinda odd issue, the field of view is much narrower than described. kinda cool though because you can see persons further away than with a wider angle camera.

Not impresses with this camera. I know it’s not a $5000 thermal camera, but it was not at all what they advertise it to be. In their ads and even in there app they say “made for iPhone” and they show a greatly defined thermal image. Not my case. Images are super pixelated. To the point you can’t even tell what you’re looking it. You just get general thermal blotches. The little I could make out made me assess that the camera was super zoomed in for some reason? Which is weird to me seeing as how all the ads for this item show close ups? But I had to stand more than halfway across a room to get a window full frame. Maybe this hardware just isn’t optimized for my iPhone X. The software, I guess, could be considered optimized seeing as how it takes up more screen than a non optimized app. By that I just mean there’s less of the black bar. There still is some black bar in the app. The amazon page makes no mention of any specific iPhones. Just says made for iPhone. Box specifies which iPhones. Should be on the product page to avoid issues All in all, not happy with the item. Didn’t work for me. Did not perform as it’s show in ads to perform First image is of my fireplace. Just shows general shapes. No definition whatsoever. Second image is of my window. As sharp as I could get it to look. Shows two different temperatures. The range on the left shows it should be two different colors but both temperatures are displayed as green? Returned. Do not recommend, unless you have the phones specified. Then maybe it’ll be different for you. But at $200+. Wouldn’t bother

My son and his family moved to Colorado a few years ago. They live about 40 miles west of Denver. On occasion, there are mountain lion alerts given for his area. They are raising my wonderful grand daughter and have 3 dogs. When the alerts go out about a mountain lion sighting, they become very concerned. The alerts give people time to bring their pets inside and to take care about safety of their household during the night hours. My son tells me this unit does exactly as stated. My daughter-in-law has the an iphone, so I chose that model. He says the heat signatures show up very well. The only negative he found is how the unit eats up the phone's battery power. Because the unit is powered by the phone's battery, I can understand that. But, you do not have to mess with other batteries. This method used to power the unit does save money and time by not having to purchase or constantly recharge another set of batteries. Also, if you research other thermal type detectors, you can see where they could cost thousands of dollars. Even though this unit eats up the battery power from the phone pretty quick, you would be hard pressed to complain about it versus paying the money for those other types of cameras.

This is a breakthrough thermal imaging product that is one of the first that is affordable ($300 price range) to the general public as an attachment to Android or iOS phones. Although it is not emphasized as much as it might be, it works with iOS7 or later iPads, which is what I'm using. Downloading the free app and plugging in the camera in the Lightning port gave thermal images within a few seconds. There are several false color palettes that give temperature maps that allow differences of 1 degree F or less to be displayed. The resolution of 206 x 156 is low compared to visual cameras but is the highest by far available in its price range. I've been using it for neighborhood watch, wildlife spotting, and general exploration. It is a whole new and educational way of looking at the world. A few issues that are not showstoppers: the routine to save images does not work with iOS7 iPads yet. I contacted Seek Thermal, which says they are aware and working on a fix. I was told the iOS8 version corrects this problem, but in the meantime, stills are available with screenshots. When the iPad is rotated from vertical to landscape mode, the image sometimes ends up upside down. The problem can be avoided by rotating it more slowly. I note that the temperature algorithm is still being refined by the manufacturer and should not be expected to be as accurate as scientific-grade cameras costing $10 K or more. Readings for vigorously boiling water were around 210 F, albeit bouncing around several degrees because of the turbulence (the actual boiling point at my elevation) and 39 F for an ice/water mix as opposed to 32 F. Readings below these are systematically too high (15 F for a clear sky on a cold night after stabilizing vs. effective temperature of less than -40). I used a commercial imager from another manufacturer that I also own to verify that despite the high night sky readings with the Seek, the Seek Thermal XR sensor was able to see thin clouds with temperatures under -40, matching the manufacturer's claim. Software and firmware updates are available to download free from the Seek Thermal website. Despite the problems I mentioned, I recommend the Seek Thermal XR without reservation.

Beeld was redelijk, al had ik hogere verwachtingen. Helaas al na een aantal weken kapot, omdat ik het aan de Ipad in een koffer had. Bij transport is de connector afgebroken. Die zit met een korte flatcable aan de print, dus makkelijk te vervangen, maar geen leverancier voor te vinden.

Unfortunately I have been using this product for a while so it is too late to return it. I didn't think to really test the temperature range until recently, after buying a temperature controlled soldering iron. The temperature tops at 105ºC, a far cry from the reported 330ºC. I can't really test the lower range, it reports -15ºC on my freezer and the weather rarely goes below 0º here.

För det första var förpackningen redan bruten, måhända någon annan som också returnerat den. Köpte den i avsikt att analysera den vattenburna golvvärmen. Rörmokaren hade en variant där man kunde se var slingorna gick och också se i fördelaren vart värmen gick och inte. Denna kamera är 100% värdelös för detta syfte. Går inte alls att utläsa slingor eller något annat. Rörmokarens variant kostade några tusenlappar till, försöker hitta en sådan istället.
