Babylon 5: Season 4

In season 4, Babylon 5 reaches its climax. Captain John Sheridan and company must face down both the Shadows and the tyrannical government of Earth President Clark. Due to financial problems on the part of the tv network airing B5, JMS had to condense two seasons into one with Season 4. As a result, a few moments do feel rushed.That said, the great moments and episodes more than outweigh any drawbacks. My favorite part, by far, is the relationship between G'Kar and Londo Mollari. Here, the two old enemies must forge an alliance to save their peoples from both the Shadows and the crazed emperor Cartagia (who may have been the inspiration for both Commodus in Gladiator and Joffrey in Game of Thrones). Both characters have come a long way since their initial debut (or even season 2). The space battles are well-choreographed (even if the cgi is dated), and everyone fits their role to a T.

This review is for the 2004 edition. Based on the other reviews, the 2009 edition is probably better. (check)This is one of the best seasons of the show (the other was season 3), but it's also quite dark, although not as dark as the new Battlestar Galactica. Since they didn't know they would get a fifth season, JM Straczynski moved his plots around so the Shadow War would be done after episode 6, with the rest of the season dedicated to the war against the corrupt Earth government. Darkness: death and resurrection, creepy Lorien, an insane emperor (played like John Hurt's version of Caligula), bad Kosh (aka Ulkesh), the betrayal and torture of Sheridan, Garibaldi's, um...(spoiler deleted), sacrificing one life for another, and an apocalypse 500 years beyond 2261. I love Babylon 5! Season 4 sees the climax of the Shadow war. Things have come to a head, and everything in the first three seasons have led to this. It's an all out battle for the galaxy as the Shadows and their axis of allies take on Sheridan and his Alliance of Light. The Vorlons are set on their own agenda and aren't saying anything to anyone about what that agenda might be. Who will prevail in the struggle, and what will the fallout be as the battles rage on? There are always consequences in war, and this war is no different. Every war has a victor and loser, but we all know that no one ever really wins a war. What secrets will be revealed? Who will die and who will survive? AND, what happened to Mr. Garabaldi?

Season 4 covers a lot of ground bc the producers did not have assurance they'd get a 5th season. So Straczynski wound the story up in 22 episodes. I don't love everything about B5 -- the graphics/lettering are UGLY -- but costumes, makeup, prosthetics are fantastic, and even these days, believable. The actors are very good and Katsulas and Jurasik [G'kar and Mollari] are *superb*.There's heroism, venality, action and heartbreak, and wise comments on the human condition that one looks for in Science Fiction. B5 delivers.[I didn't care for episode 22, though. JMHO.]

II thought it was the English region . But was American well gutted . K . Charter .

Sheridan ist in den Abgrund gesprungen,Garribaldi verschollen und Ivanova gibt sich die Schuld für Alles...So die Ausgangslage für die 4.Staffel,für Viele die Beste und für mich definitiv mit der 3. zusammen DAS Highlight der Serie.Auch auf Centauri Prime geht es drunter und drüber,der neue Imperator Cartagia droht die Republik dem Untergang zu weihen,um selbst zum Gott aufzusteigen.Zu allem Überfluss gerät auch noch G'Kar in seine Gewalt und wächst weit über seine Grenzen hinaus,Londo kann nur hilflos zusehen...Sheridans ohnehin schon brüchige Allianz der Völker gegen die Schatten droht zu zerbrechen und der Krieg nimmt an Brutalität und Grauen zu.Sicher plaudere ich jetzt kein großes Geheimnis mehr aus,wenn ich sage,das Sheridan noch lebt und zurückkehrt mit Hilfe des geheimnisvollen Lorien...Damals konnte man da gar nicht so sicher sein,doch immerhin war es Koshs Geist,der Sheridan in der letzten Folge von Staffel 3 zum Sprung geraten hatte und da Kosh zu den Guten gehörte...Der Vorloe dürfte sowas ja nicht ohne Grund getan haben,also bestand Hoffnung.Auch Garibaldi wird wieder gefunden,verhält sich aber zunehmend anders als gewohnt,kündigt seinen Job und geht auf offene Distanz zu Sheridan.Dieser beendet den Krieg gegen die Schatten und setzt im Folgenden Alles daran,die Erde vom Joch Präsident Clarks zu befreien.Besondere Highlights dieses Staffelfinales sind hier Sheridans Gefangennahme,sein Verhör,die Befreiung,Lyta und Stephen Franklins Mission auf dem Mars,die Story um William Edgars und dessen Frau und Ex-Geliebte Garibaldis,das Zusammentreffen aller und was wirklich mit Garibaldi passiert ist...Für mich definitiv die beste Folge ist hier "Das Werkzeug der Vergeltung".Und hier zeigt sich auch,wie sehr Ivanova künftig fehlen wird...Claudia Christian erhält wie gehabt viele sehr gute Szenen und bekommt letztlich einen guten Abgang.Etwas entschädigt werden die Garibaldi-Fans in den letzten Folgen und besonders dem neuen Staffelende,welches erst gedreht wurde,als eine 5. Staffel als sicher galt.Dafür ist "In hundert,in tausend Jahren..." für mich aber auch die definitiv Schlechteste der gesamten Staffel.Besser,man hätte die Staffel mit 21 Folgen eben belassen oder doch "Der Weg ins Licht" darangehängt als diesen Aufguss.Nichtsdestotrotz eine Staffel,in der es wirklich rund geht,sehr viel Spannung vorherrscht,emotionale Höhen und Tiefen,und es mal keine Folge außerhalb der epischen Mythologie der ganzen Serie gibt.Hier MUSS man alle Folgen kennen,um mitzukommen,wird aber auch nicht enttäuscht.Eine Randbemerkung muss allerdings sein: JMS hat in dieser Staffel den Kampf Gut gegen Böse (sehr gut in der Gegenüberstellung in "Das dritte Zeitalter") und deren Beweggründe aufgezeigt,auch mit Sheridan das Thema Tod und Auferstehung aufgenommen,dito dann Sheridans Verehrung etc.Und bezeichnenderweise ist es auch Folge DREI der Staffel,in der Sheridan zurückkehrt."Am 3. Tage..."Soviel also zu den Kritikern der religiösen Ansätze in Lost Tales...Wie gehabt bietet die Box wieder Interviews mit JMS etc.Ein MUSS für echte Fans guter SciFi

Season 4 takes us on a rollercoaster ride. High tension and quiet introspection. Deft intrigue and sprited action.In this one season we participate - for we cannot help become invested in the story - with the crew in- ending the Shadow war, where the heroes had no chance to match the force of the Shadows- a Minbari civil war- an Earth civil war- a season long sub-plot with a key individual- love, peace, violence and deathWas the cast comprised of only the greatest thespians? No.Is the CGI starting to look a little rough? A bit.Is the story constantly compelling? Damned straight!As a season, this one is excellent. And Babylon 5 is exceptional as a whole.

Serie, unterm Strich die beste Sci Fi Serie ever, die Story dahinter, die Anspielungen auf diverse Zustände heute, in der Vergangenheit, die Probleme etc, die Animationen hätten teilsweise etwas mehr kosten dürfen, aber wer sich mit Bab 5 auskennt weiss, das es schon ein Wunder war das man mit den Mitteln das hinbekommen hat und nicht aufgegeben wurde, obwohl von Anfang an mit dem Scheitern gerechnet wurde, aber man wird nicht enttäsucht, für Sci Fi Fans ein must have

So with the fourth season, having watched close to half of it now, they actually improved the video quality over the previous third season. No graininess or pixilation like the previous season and overall quality of the video just seems to pop on my 720p Samsung plasma. Once again at a price just under $12 it was a very good purchase.
