will this take 6 awg wire?

NO ... 6/4 wire is needed but it's a little too large to fit into the hole at the bottom of the plug.

Will this work on metal clad cable

Electrically, it will. I Purchased under the EATON brand name, and is one of the few designs with blades/screws properly designed for 50A. I purchase & returns 2 others that were fire hazards. HOWEVER the clamp on this plug will only secure RUBBER. I would not use on metal clad.
