Core i5-4590S

Great for small/quiet quad core builds.
This is a great quad core CPU for small or quiet builds don't want the heat of an 84+ watt CPU. It performs close to the non-S version but has a much lower 65 watt TDP allowing for a smaller/quieter cooler and smaller/quieter case fan. Basically it's an i5-4590S with slightly lower clock speed and a lower "managed" TDP which basically means it performs close to the regular i5-4590 except when you simulateously load all 4 cores and make the integrated graphics work hard--which pretty much only happens with serious gaming. So, for say video transcoding, the "S" version comes very close to the regular version as the integrated graphics is not using any significant power - nearly the full 65 watts is available for the CPU cores. It idles under 3 watts which is amazing for a fast quad core CPU yet is fast when you need it to be. I've found in a small mATX or HTPC chassis it's difficult to keep an 84 watt CPU cool under sustained load (say video transcoding, gaming, etc.). This CPU solves the problem. For even lower power there's also the quad core i5-4570T (35 watt TDP) but it's a big drop in performance over this CPU with lower clocks, less cache, but isn't much cheaper.

Great quadcore for mini computers such as a alienware alpha! Socket 1150
I bought this as a used processor for a Alienware Alpha first gen, and I believe it or the 4690s is the perfect balance for this computer. If it was not the S variant the limited power supply 130w would downclock it quite a bit where this processor is not being downclocked under heavy loads as I've run some benchmarks and it's holding at 2.977 which for a 3.0 chip is good I believe. It does turbo when it's using a couple cores well into the 3's. I was able to pick up this chip at about $100 dollars less that a 4690s so to me it wasn't worth the price difference for the .2 frequency difference. I'm consistently getting a passmark of 4200-500 on the system overall which for this little machine I believe is great! Great quad core for a 1150 socket!

Great CPU - Low Power - Easy to Cool
Upgraded from an i5-750 to the 4590S. The lower power consumption makes cooling a breeze in the ITX case. The CPU and video (2 monitors) works as expected. If you're suffering from low T...
In the past I've used CPUs like the i3-2100T for things like HTPC's and desktops that are primarily used for non-gaming applications. That's fine if you really want the emphasis to be on lower power consumption, otherwise I'd recommend going with this one. It's kinda like a happy middle offering both lower power (65w) and more performance (3.0GHz to 3.7GHz). There is a i5-4590T (35w), which you can't find in retail box at the moment, but even the tray/OEM cost is not much cheaper than the i5-4590S.I've paired this processor with a GIGABYTE GA-Z97N-WIFI, Corsair Vengeance 8GB (CML8GX3M2A1600C9), Noctua NH-L9I HSF, and am very happy with the setup. For a 4th gen refresh, not a bad choice until the Broadwell (5th gen) chips arrive. Just note that only Z97 chipset motherboards are supposed to be compatible if you are looking to upgrade later and keep the same mobo.

Satisfied
I'm using this in a desktop that also serves as a Plex server and it is awesome. It runs strong and cool and easily handles 3 1080p streams to my devices throughout the house. It sips power and is perfect for my needs.

The "S" does not mean slow.
The 4590S benchmarks only marginally slower than the 4590, but it runs a lot cooler and quieter and uses about 25% less electricity. This is a good choice in balancing between performance and reliability in an always-on system.
