Math Art: Hands-On Math Activities for Grades 2, 3, and 4

PROS: I've found this book quite helpful. As a 2nd grade teacher, I was able to use these lessons to effectively teach math topics that students usually do not master until 3rd or 4th grade (or even later). For instance, in past years I usually only briefly introduce the topics of area and perimeter. But this book's area and perimeter lessons finally allowed my second graders to deeply understand these topics. I also love the lessons on fractions and multiples.With its good objectives and convenient lesson materials, I can see these lessons were written by a teacher and not a corporate staff writer. I also own Scholastic's "MathART" book and can honestly say that this book is 10x better.CONS: The book doesn't provide quite enough suggested lesson extensions. Some of the simpler lessons (such as Square Numbers and Addition) really need to be extended. However, a good teacher should be able to figure out obvious extensions on her own.Also, the book is 8x10, which makes photocopying the assessments and blackline masters onto 8.5x11 a little tedious. I often needed to make single copies, trim their black edges, and then photocopy again. Just a minor criticism.

I bought this book for a friend who likes to do hands on math projects for children with learning disabilities. She used it to help children understand many concepts. When she retired I passed it on to another teacher. Unfortunately I was NOT teaching math at that time. Both teachers found the book to be useful for students even in grade 5 who were struggling. So I would reccomend it to you if you teach math in grades 2-5, and the students need visuals to learn. It may also be a good resource for an art teacher to combine math with art.. Great BOOK..

This book is great! Each lesson requires students to create their own versions of the teacher's example project. The projects cover a large range of topics including multiples, map scale, area/perimeter/volume, and fractions of a set. Each lesson includes reproducible black line masters and assessments (you might need to modify some assessments if you use lessons to teach additional topics, since most of the assessments are pretty short).Some of the projects are more "artsy" than others, but all of them are great for teaching students fundamental math concepts!

Good ideas inside, but to me, this book is for teachers to plan a lesson from who need extra resources. You can tweek some activities to make it short and sweet which is what I plan to do

This is a great book to use to reinforce math skills and add a bit of "art" and link the concepts.

This book is helping me to successfully reinforce Math concepts that I am teaching my son, in a way that he thoroughly enjoys. He gets excited when I pull this book from the shelf. I appreciate the way that it shows how different math concepts interrelate. Highly recommended.

Looking forward to trying many activities in my classroom.

I really wanted to like this book as it was highly recommended, but with TpT available now, this was overpriced and not as 'artsy' as I'd hoped. Many of the lessons are visibly outdated printer-wise without high quality graphics or clean cut lines. I didn't feel it was worth the money and returned it.

I bought this as a gift for my daughters form teacher. It has lots of great ideas for teaching maths through art, perfect for all young children but particularly those that are very 'visual' . Helps to get the kids to experience what maths really is, rather than something abstract taught from a text book. Lots of photocopy able bits at the back to help get projects kick started.

Different approach with creative concepts. Arrived on time.
