John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was one of the greatest portrait artists of his time. While he is best known for his powerful paintings, he largely ceased painting portraits in 1907 and turned instead to charcoal drawings to satisfy portrait commissions. These drawn portraits represent a substantial, yet often overlooked, part of his practice, and they demonstrate the same sense of immediacy, psychological sensitivity, and mastery of chiaroscuro that animate Sargent’s sitters on canvas. This volume presents over sixty superb portrait drawings, showcasing sitters famous for their roles in politics, society, and the arts. It also explores the friendships and the networks of patronage that underpinned Sargent’s practice as a portrait draftsman in Edwardian Britain and Progressive Era America. Review: My go to art reference for charcoal drwings - This book is just beautiful. I am happy to just page through the excellent illustrations and then read as much as I am in the mood for. I am an artist, and I am actively creating life drawings and portraits. I have found this book to be an excellent stop when I wonder, how would Sargent have dealt with this. Review: Fabulous reproductions - The reproductions are good enough that you get the feeling that you are seeing the original. One can see details of Sargent's techniques. A wonderful buy for the price.

Page after page of wonderful portraits
Great artist's resource when learning to draw portraits. And fascinating information. He made compacted balls of bread to lift pigment instead of kneadable eraser. Which may not have existed at that time? Spending good amount of time reading and looking again and again.

Excellent book and treatment of the subject
Excellent book and treatment of the subject. I love Sargent’s paintings and was unaware that he had done so many charcoal portraits. This is a beautiful book with lots of excellent photos of the charcoal portraits. I bought the book as a gift for an artist friend who had just returned from a visit of the Morgan Library and Museums’s exhibit of these charcoals. She highly recommended a visit and I hope to be able to do so while it is at the Morgan.

Indispensable for Admirers of John Singer Sargent's Charcoal Portraits
“John Singer Sargent, Portraits in Charcoal” is an elegant catalog written by Sargent’s grand-nephew and eminent art historian, Richard Ormond. The book accompanies the exhibition, also curated by Mr. Ormond, of Sargent’s charcoal portraits on display at the Morgan Library in New York. I was fortunate to enjoy the exhibition earlier this month and can revisit the portraits and the biographies of Sargent’s sitters in this beautifully written and designed catalog. I recommend this book for anyone who loves Sargent’s work and wants to learn more about the bold and inimitable charcoal portraits he did later in his prolific career as an artist who was mainly known for his oils and watercolors.

Ritratti stupendi, bella edizione
Ritratti stupendi.

Portraits in Charcol
Exceptional quality of reproduction. Inspired by the commentary but most of all, by the portraits, by the charcoals, chosen.
