It is a self-contained speaker with microphone. The audio is very good, although, like most speakers, it can distort a bit when you push the volume up too high.

I keep my android phone locked (i use a fingerprint or pin to unlock). will i need to manually unlock the phone each time i want to make a call?

If you use a password, pin or bio (eye or finger) to unlock your phone. Android Version 9 and below WILL NOT unlock your phone when connected to a trusted Bluetooth device, they will only STAY unlocked once connected IF it is already unlocked. When you get in your car, your phone MUST be unlocked BEFORE connecting to this or you will be prompted to Unlock Your Phone when you try to make a call. You can receive calls without unlocking your phone. Other then this unlock issue (an Android issue), this is a great Bluetooth device.

will this work well with an iphone 5 (ios 7.x)?Not just pair, but do many of the functions by voice command well,, as it does for Moto?
