great product
If you have never tried these...you soak them in water/broth for 10-15 minutes drain, cook them I love to put them in BBQ sauce with onions and garlic for pulled pork (like) sandwiches. I am vegan and made some for our church BBQ.... they served pulled pork....my crock pot was the one that everyone ate, and they were so surprised that it was so very good. Great value, shelf stable, taste and smell great cooking , 11 grams protein and 6 grams fiber per serving. I bought a bag, and the rest, as they say, is history. If you’re new to soy curls, how to prep them, and how to roast them to easily add heartiness and delicious texture to an array of plant-based dishes. I use them in Soups, chilis, curries, and stews, and wraps Taco, tostadas, and enchiladas, Stir-fries and pasta, Chicken-less chicken classics, like soy curls with orange sauce or Buffalo sauce. Google recipes like I did using Soy Curls.

I LOVE YOU! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE!!??
BUTLER SOY CURLS: You are my everything! Holy crap I love these things! How have I never heard of them before? Ok, so, it's like, only one company in the world that makes them (!?), so forget shopping around for a better price (seriously, how can there be ONE source?). Good news is, they are a great company, so I guess I don't mind. DO this: Add hot water, let sit for 10min, squeeze the excess water out with paper towels until reasonably moist/dry, and presto-whizzo you've got a protein ready to rock ANYTHING. THE GOOD: Spice them up and they become fajita meat, throw in broth and they are chicken...literally, whatever flavor you add, these "soy curls" absorb and perform! The consistency and 'bite' is perfect...not too soft, not too firm/chewy. I could eat these all day. Full disclosure: I have eaten them naked -- nothing but rehydrated soy curls! True. I probably wouldn't recommend that way but they are just fine as a snack. THE BAD: A certain proportion of the bag is crushed/crumbled/dust. This part is not cool, and NOW I understand why one reviewer says that she "sorts" immediately upon receiving. LOL. (Forgive my sarcastic musing when I first read that.) No, seriously, totally do that. FIRST. Unless you plan to use the whole bag at once, you will be left with no joy when you hit the bottom of the bag. There will be nothing bu flat-stanleys and miserable little outcast orphan pieces that you won't know what to do with. ***I now officially SORT by SIZE immediately upon receiving. (Apologies to the original reviewer who noted that, which caused me to utter uneducated sarcastic commentary). DO SORT YOUR CURLS upon arrival! COMMENTARY: It would be super-great however, if Barton's could figure out a way to fix this soy-dust issue themselves..... I'd even pay more to be assured of 100% usability of all product. Just sayin. P.S. those tiny pieces work well as "thickener" to say soups or stews where the thing itself is not the main course (unlike a satay, or fajita, say...). Buy these. If you are someone who is looking for soy protein, you are someone who will LOVE this product.

Perfect meat substitute
There was a time period a few years back where I couldn’t have most meats for medical reasons but I was craving it really bad. I was in college when I tried this product and it was amazing. Essentially it tastes like whatever you flavor it as. The texture isn’t 100% meaty but it’s really close. This was such a blessing product for me during that time. It’s very versatile and easy to make. Most times I would just do them in the microwave and mix it with rice and soy sauce.

Pretty decent
EDIT: the crumbs are awesome for making low carb/keto breading for chicken!!! Save them and spice them up, dip chicken in a little flour (if not doing keto - use a little lupin flour or leave flour out instead), in egg and than the spiced soy crumbs, fry on medium (higher heat will burn the crumbs) .. The way the 3 bags are smushed together in a plastic bag that would normally fit 1-2 bags in it max, results in lots of fine crumbs and small pieces!! For basically $8 a bag for 5 small servings each, these could be protected/packed together better!! So although i usually don't eat soy products, never been a big fan...i got this to try for the purpose of trying to fix my post-menopause symptoms that won't ease up the natural way.. i started taking NOW Soy Isoflavones 60mg supplement twice a day 2-3 days ago and was reading up and saw that adding 'soy protein' is also recommend as well. I did not want to mess with tofu, miso and all that so when i saw these and saw they would be simple & quick to make and be good as an add-in into other foods to meet my 25 grams of 'soy protein' (1 1/3 servings - 40 grams dry) per day, i decided to try it... not bad at all i must say, i soaked 40g in water for about 20mins, drained, sautéed/fried them dry in bacon fat, added salt/pepper/red pepper flakes and mixed it into ledo's leftover mac & cheese and added cheddar cheese.. was pretty good, kinda like chicken actually however, the bigger pieces were bland some so definitely will be soaking future portion in salt water and maybe even chicken broth.. Price is not too bad overall, will order and stock up on these again for sure..

Super yummy!!!!
I’ve been deacon for 12 years now and this is the first time I’ve tried these. Why did I wait so long!? They are so yummy! I just rehydrated with some purified water than squeezed out the excess. Pan fried with some salt, pepper and garlic, and I ate them right out of the pan. Can’t wait to experiment with these in my recipes. Don’t hesitate to try they are so worth it!

Lions, tigers, and bears-oh my!!
Let me begin by stating that I am an off and on vegetarian. Raised as an omni, I became a veg-head after my first child was born - not by choice, but by necessity. It wasn't a bad experience as I have always liked vegetables, but I was used to having them share the spotlight with fish, chicken, beef, or pork. Fast forward 13 years and, though I do not eat fish, beef or pork and very seldom eat chicken, I often find myself craving the texture of it - chicken that is. (I do not crave fish, beef or pork but my craving for chicken causes me to pinch a piece or two off of my DH's plate at least twice monthly). Anyhoo... I have tried to satisfy my cravings with various "fake meats" but it has never worked and, after a while, I became more concerned with the long list of ingredients on the side of the packaging than my cravings. Not only did these items NOT taste like the foods they were trying to mimic, they were off in texture and scent. So, back to a plate of veggies I went. Again, nothing bad here - Veggies, pasta, bean chili and veg sandwiches are da bomb - until you've had it too much. Then the bomb is in your tummy. In an effort to try to come up with some new flavors, I searched the web for recipes. I happened across a seitan recipe and was ready to take the plunge until I happened to find Soy Curls (I really wasn't looking for a "homemade" seitan recipe anyways). I found several sites with positive Soy Curls reviews and decided that I had to try it. I ordered my $8 bag...and waited. Once received, I tried them the best way I could think of - fried! I hydrated the 1 cup of the pieces in no-chicken broth, battered (like normal chicken), then fried them. Guess what? These things are good - so good that my omni fam was asking for them. I over salted (first try), but the fam said the curls still had good flavor, texture AND tasted like fried chicken. I know you are thinking that I have jacked up taste buds but these things really tasted like chicken (Seriously)! I will try another recipe and update, as we know the first try can be a fluke. Seriously, give these a try- they are really, really good. *Update* 6/5/2013 Yep guys...soy curls are da bomb. I tried these as a cheese steak substitute (I normally just use onions, peppers, and mushrooms) and the fam told me they could not tell the difference between my soy version and the beef version! I learned that 1 cup is too much for one person. Today, I used 1/2 cup and I think this will be my standard. We will try seasoning as a salad 'meat' next time. :) I agree with others regarding the purchase price here on my beloved Amazon -it's too high. However, I do urge trying a bag here first. Yeah, it's $8 but it's better to find you don't like one bag of them for $8 vs 6 bags for $30. Also, remember to hydrate thoroughly so that the flavors you desire will come through but be light on the salt. Lastly, these puppies can be baked, fried, and sautéed - oh my!! Overall good purchase! *Update* 6/11/13 Ok, so I haven't tried any as a salad garnish yet. However, DH grilled out yesterday and I was excited to see if I could get that same chargrilled flavor with the curls. Ummm, ummm, ummm...very good! After soaking in a mixture Worcestershire and Chipotle Tabasco sauce, I sautéed, placed in aluminum foil and plopped on the grill. Once again, the fam liked my dinner - maybe a bit too much as they began to offer me the food from their plates (feeling guilty about eating mine, maybe???). I will try as a salad garnish tomorrow and update soon afterwards.

These things are game changers! Where have these been all my life?!?!
Yummmm! I like these a lot! And I'm usually NOT a fan of meat analogs or tofu. In fact we're usually omnivores... but my husband's cholesterol got high, so we're changing our diet. I wish I had known about these sooner in my life. After watching some YouTube reviews of these, I bought a bag to try. I'm so glad I did! They're not EXACTLY like chicken strips, but honestly once you get the corn meal breading on there and are dipping them in barbecue sauce, they're a good enough facsimile. You could probably feed these to the kids and get away with it. If I ranked them next to frozen fake chick'n strips, the frozen kinds would be about a 2 and these would be an 11! Yeah they go all the way up to 11! To prepare them, I did the following: - Obtain 1 large handful of soy curls (I didn't measure) - Soak in boiling water to rehydrate, for about 15 minutes. Drain and squeeze out the excess water, set aside. Mix up: - 1 small can of tomato sauce - 2 tsp liquid smoke - 1 tsp onion powder - 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar - 1 tbsp maple syrup - 1 cup of vegetable or mushroom broth Or basically anything else you might think tastes good as a marinade. I was thinking "tangy umami" as a flavor profile. Soak the curls in this marinade for an hour or so. Or overnight. Who cares. Then, preheat the oven to 385. While it's heating up, mix together: - 1 cup of coarse cornmeal - 1 tsp salt - 1 tsp pepper Drain the soy curls out of the marinade, toss them in the corn meal mixture to coat, and put them on an oven tray. Bake them until crispy and lightly browned, serve immediately with dipping sauces. This is a completely vegan recipe. There is no need to use oil for these, nor should you deep fry them - save yourself the calories! They'll hold up to deep frying, but why bother with the mess and calories and all that, ugh! A simple tray bake is FINE. Butler Soy Curls. Okay. There's a reason why people buy 'em by the BOCKS. I really wish I'd known about these earlier in my life. Honestly I don't even get why, if your favorite kind of chicken is chunks or strips of breast meat (which is how most people eat chicken these days anyway), why you'd even bother to BUY chicken if these are available. The ingredient list is short: "whole soybeans". The curls are cheap, especially when compared to buying meat. The prep is easy. They're plant based and a whole food. No sugar, salt, or oils added - you can add whatever you like, or don't. Diabetic friendly. I would dare say, keto friendly. No danger of salmonella contamination during the prep, no slimy chicken juice, no slicing. And I bet, if I chop up some of these in my food processor and season them up, they'll make a wonderful ground beef substitute, too. Looking for a nice veg substitute for chicken? Give these a whirl. You might like them!
