Greenworks 40V 16" Brushless Chainsaw, 4.0Ah Battery and Charger Included

I have used this saw daily for over two years. I own two gas saws, a Husqavarna Rancher 460, and a Poulan Pro 16" saw. This cordless saw is equivalent to my Poulan Pro which I will probably never use again. I especially like this saw because it is quiet....plus it works all the time. I live in a ranch community and people are living here to get away from noise. This saw allows me to collect fire wood in places where I would othewise be disturbing the tranquility of the community. I am stunned at the battery life, and how quickly it can be recharged. By the time the battery runs down, I am run down as well. And ready for a break. Toss in another battery and your good to go. AThe other thing I like are the safety features. The saw is light and easy to handle and this really helps reduce stress. The chain brake works well. The other thing I really like is the ability to adjust the chain without needing tools. Just make sure you check the tightness periodically. I put a couple of drops of blue Loctite on the threads to help keep the hand tightened bar retainer from loosening. I cut through some huge 24 inch white oak today. Normally, this would be a job for my Rancher 460. While it took considerably longer with the Greenworks, it was much more pleasant and I was free from noxious exhaust and forest raping noise. I will follow up with an update after a month or so of use.Update: I use this saw routinely since initial purchase and especially during the winter months in NC. My house is at 4k feet in the Great Smokies in NC. It is heated with an outdoor wood boiler. I feed my furnace with the plentiful seasoned dead fall which litters my property and ranch community. On a single charge, this saw will fill the bed of my Tacoma shortbed truck. I use the saw several times per week and it has never failed me. Rarely do I ever use my gas saws anymore except for really big stuff. I bought an extra battery for the saw but rarely use it. My back runs down before the saw battery. My neighbors never hear me cutting, and I can cut in areas where I might otherwise be disturbing somebody. Even if it fails on me...I will immediately purchase another because it makes cutting so much more pleasant and safe. Tip: I spray the chain with DuPont Chain Saver....my chains stay sharp even when I am cutting soiled dead fall. This Teflon product is simply amazing for this purpose.Update: Been using this saw for several years now. Even bought a spare to keep on the shelf if they ever discontinue this model. All I have had to do is sharpen the chain. I put a new chain and bar on this year, and also a new chain sprocket. Probably didn’t meet to. I spray the saw bar with DuPont Teflon spray. Unless I hit a rock, chain works all season and stay very sharp. I bought the 80 volt version of this saw, but newer use it since it is heavier and does not seem to run as long. Also got the 8” greenworks pole saw. This saw is incredibly handy and adds a lot of safety when you are cutting any wood. With the pole saw, you can stand away from cuts that might be under spring loading. This is important when cutting dead fall which whipsaw you when you least expect it. That 40v pole saw.is super handy and much safer for clearing trails and overhead stuff.

I don't cut firewood for a heat source, so I didn't want to buy a gas chainsaw. In the price range I wanted, I would end up with a saw that I would have to rebuild the carb every year or two when I needed it. This 40V electric saw allows you to grab and go. I had some large maple trees taken down and the wood lefton my property, so this saw has gotten plenty of work. It will cut through a 10-12" log in 15 seconds...without making my ears ring. It is very quiet. That can almost be dangerous, as the lack of noise fools you about how much power it has. I can easily cut for about 30-40 minutes on one battery, spending most of the time cutting. Don't try to force the saw, just rock it back and forth and let it cut. I've cut 24"+ logs with this saw and a 16" bar. I was skeptical that it would work, and did a lot of research. Based on reviews and cost, I went with the Greenworks 40v 16" saw. I previously had a 14" corded saw that was great, but not all that convenient. I can grab this saw and take it to fallen limbs or sections of a felled tree and it will run until I want to take a break (I'm 27 and in good shape). If the battery gets low, I throw it on the charger for a couple hours, find something else to do, and then I can be right back at it. If you just need a saw to maintain your property or cut small wood piles, this saw is perfect. You can't cut all day without stopping, as it runs on a battery, but the battery can get you through quite a few large cuts.Edit: I have bought additional 40v Greenworks tools since this review and having an additional battery is quite nice. The 4.0ah battery lasts a long time when cutting branches and logs smaller than 8". I have been cutting up two 80' silver maple trees this past year, and the larger logs go through the battery fast. I can probably cut 8-10 18-20" logs before the battery gets low, so an extra battery comes in handy. I've been able to cut 30" wide logs with this saw. It takes a couple of minutes, but it will do it. I've probably used the saw through about 60-70 full batteries and it still operates like it did new.1.5 Year Update: Saw still works great. Not sure how much I've used it, but I've gone through almost a gallon of bar oil with it. So nice to have a quiet saw I can just grab and go to cut big or small stuff when needed.

I have a love/hate relationship with this saw. I love the power and it cuts as well as most gas chainsaws. I have been chainsawing for 43 years and I am pleased with its performance. When the battery runs down, I am tired because of all the sawing I have done. Also, I trim a lot which means I make a few cuts and then have to move some brush before I make a few more cuts. I love not restarting the gas saw every time. Now the bad stuff--when I got this, the chain oiler did not work. I did not know until I burned up the chain which didn't take long. I took it in the the factory repair place an hour away from me and waited for 2 months for the repair. The factory sent the wrong part several times. 2 months is a long time when a dead tree has fallen in your driveway and you want to move it. The other thing I don't like is the automatic shutoff. There is no predictability. I can saw for 10 seconds on small branches or a couple of minutes on a 12" log and the saw will turn off unexpectedly. It is not overheating or it would not perform awesomely immediately after the shutdown. Sometimes it works flawlessly for many cuts, other times it shuts down every 2 seconds for about 10 times and then magically fixes itself. It is simple to start back up--just turn it on again, but this is so irritating. During a typical sawing session of big and little wood, I would guess that the saw shuts off 40 or 50 times on a single battery charge. Maybe I have a bad battery or the saw has a defect in the battery chip, or maybe this is just the nature of the tool. I don't know how to test this except buy another battery and see if the problem continues. I have not seen this issue addressed in any other reviews. Do I have a lemon or is this a quirky saw? I thought about returning it but it is a hassle, so I am learning to live with it. My advice is buy from someone local like home depot so it is easy to return if you are dissatisfied.UPDATE Oct 2016I really love this saw. I figured out the quirks. The saw cuts off if you are pushing hard while cutting--just an overload protection. Let the saw do the work and it works like a champ.

The main issue with this saw is the brand new chain cutter links are so short that they look like a worn out chain that is about to be thrown away. But I cut half of a cord of blown down oak, the limbs and the 20" trunk using less than 3 charged batteries, WOW! I was so impressed that when my wife (we are both recently retired) told me she wanted to upgrade from a snow shovel to a little snow blower, I recommended that she buy the Green Works 12" snowblower package for about $200. No snow yet on the apron in front of the house yet to try the snowblower yet, but the extra 40v battery and extra battery charger looked like the perfect addition to the chainsaw! We can now go out in the morning and I cut oak firewood while she shuffles blocks of wood and branches for about 45 minutes, we split the wood with a 20 ton gas powered splitter pulled behind the 4 wheeler, go back home and put BOTH batteries on the 2 chargers on a timer set for 3 hours to avoid cooking the batteries (especially during end of the day charging), eat lunch and relax a bit and then go out in the afternoon and repeat the process with a LOT less noise and no yanking on that recoil starter rope of my 30 year old Jonsered 535 gas saw that has no decompression valve! ( I had shoulder rotator cuff surgery a couple of years ago) We are VERY HAPPY so far, I just hope the batteries last a couple of years. As far as the folks making comments about the oil tank leaking, or the chain falling off, or the chain oiler not working (enough oil for about 1 hour run time) or short battery run time, and regular bar oil works just fine by the way. I honestly believe that they are wanna-be lumberjacks that have NO past chainsaw experience to know how to set-up and safely operate such a well built product. I honestly (honestly, for ONCE in my life) highly recommend this CHINESE product! It works GREAT! As I mentioned earlier, the cutting links on the original chain are too short to sharpen more than a couple of times, but that's the only issue I have had after cutting my second face cord of big oak today! This saw is NOT a toy! We have so far cut 2/3 of our firewood to heat our home this winter!Update... attached pics are the 1/2 cord of oak wood I cut using a total of 3 charged batteries. The trailer bed is 8 feet long, 40" wide, and the pile averages 26" high. I like the saw so much I bought 2 new Oregon chains #R56 (fits PERFECT!) and use my same old Timber Tuff CS-BMM benchtop electric chain saw sharpener with the 3/16" wheel (@$50) for a REALLY sharp chain with great results, much better than a Dremel type tool with a 5/32" bit I used at first on both saws! Timber Tuff does not have a 5/32" grinding wheel available for that model sharpener. Even though it is 1/32" wider than the Greenworks and Johnsered 5/32" chains specify. It only makes a little nick in the main part of the chain that has never been an issue, and the saw power is not affected by the slightly deeper cut the chain makes. Don't worry, be happy! And GO CUT SOME WOOD!

A few weeks ago I borrowed my dad's Stihl Farm Boss to fell a maple in my front yard. Unfortunately he needed his saw back and I was stuck with 5 more trees to fell and no saw. I took a chance on this because I plan to buy a few other cordless tools from this company and I am not disappointed in my decision at all.I've only owned the saw for a couple days but today I felled two mulberry trees with about 7 inch diameter trunks (yes seriously), pruned 4-5 limbs from a maple and a couple more from other trees on my property. I then cut both trees into 14" logs. It was a full day's work.Based on that here's a quick review.BATTERY LENGTHI bought an extra battery. If you can't refuel you can't work. Each battery lasts about as long as a tank of gas in the Farm Boss. I'm not going to say how much wood you can cut because it depends on the density and size of the wood you're cutting. Obviously denser, larger trees are going to burn more fuel whether it's gas or electric.I'd say I worked for about 2-3 hours before it gave out, the second battery didn't die before I was done so 2 batteries gave me about 6 hours of work. Since the batteries charges in about 2 hours that seemed like a decent length for me. If I can charge a battery before the one I'm using gives out I'm happy. When the battery dies it beeps at you to let you know that's why the saw stopped. The batteries pop in and out with a click lock and are very simple to insert and remove.POWERI'm really impressed here. I feel wrong saying it's as powerful as the Farm Boss but man, it sure felt like it was. Maybe just slightly slower getting through the wood but it was hard to tell the difference without a side by side comparison. It tore right through the logs at about the same rate as the Stihl did from what I could tell. As I said I went through all green Mulberry, Maple and a couple other fruit trees. I'll be hitting pine and oak tomorrow. I did have some issues with the chain tension at first and I think that's why the first battery died so fast but once I got it right I was really impressed by the power of this saw. It's also much quieter than a gas powered saw, my wife said she could barely hear me inside the house. I had forgotten my ear plugs at first and was fine. I put them in anyway but I wasn't in any pain or anything while using it without them.SAFETYSafety features are all there and I felt very in control while using it, the brake is really easy to engage with one hand while holding the saw. and while the brake is engaged the saw beeps at you which is really annoying but it also reminded me to just turn it off.So your start up is power button, disengage the chain brake, hold down the safety button with your thumb and pull the trigger. No choke, no throttle, no rip cord. This means no crazy drop starts, no need to set it down and stand on it, just pick it up and go. I really liked starting and stopping the saw. It stops very quickly as well. Shut down is just, let go of the trigger, engage the chain brake, click the power button. The chain it comes with is low-kickback and I had no problems there. I'll probably buy a spare to have on hand, the manual gives you all the details and specs on which chains you can use with the saw.ISSUESI did have one issue with the saw at the start. I'm not sure how I feel about the easy tension adjustment and the side panel. What happened was the side panel didn't thread correctly after I'd opened it up the night before so it felt tight but it was actually not on correctly. Because of this my chain kept loosening while I was cutting. Finally the chain completely slipped off the bar and I had to stop and see what was going on. The side panel had come loose and everything was coming apart. I was kind of upset but to be fair this was partially my fault. Still, the design of the threading for the side panel bolt should be a bit bulkier and a little more heavy duty to avoid these kind of mistakes. I was able to sit down on a tree and re-thread the chain, get the panel back on correctly and get back to work in a few minutes. I had no problems after that.OVERALLThe overall design of the tool is kind of unimpressive, it looks and feels like a toy. When I opened it up I immediately felt like I had made a bad decision. It's about the same weight and feel as a small gas saw but it looks like something from Toys R Us. That's not necessarily a negative thing though. The bright green stood out enough in the lawn so I never lost sight of it but I feel like orange or something unnatural would've been better. Just because the brand name is Greenworks doesn't mean your lawn tools should be the color of your lawn. Still I had no problems spotting it from across my yard (about an acre). At the end of the day I didn't think I would be this happy with the saw but I am. I really enjoy using it, love the easy start up, love refueling it (snap a battery in) and just everything about it is pretty impressive. It came with a chain guard and a carry bag.One last thing, you still need to buy chain oil for it and will need to fill the reservoir before you run the saw. It didn't seem to use a lot of oil. With the Farm Boss we refilled the oil whenever we refilled the gas. After two batteries I still have about half a tank of oil. Maybe it just has a larger reservoir since there's no need for a gas tank?Anyway, definitely recommended for pruning, limbing and felling small-medium trees. This saw is no joke.If i have any issues I'll update and will try to review it's durability after i feel like I've really put it through it's paces.

I have been using Greenworks chainsaws for several years now. My point of comparison is the gas-powered Stihl chainsaw, both of which have 16-inch chains. The gas-powered saw will give you more power. When it works properly, it will buzz through wood like crazy. That's good. But the problem is that the gas-powered saw is like a moody grump. It needs coaxing, constant attention. In spite of your best efforts, it will be hard to start and replacement of chains is a real hassle. Stihl requires the use of at least two external tools to replace a chain. I found this process frustrating. Sure, it's easy to replace a chain in your shop, but we don't operate chainsaws in the shop, do we? Having to deal with a fussy saw in the woods can be a frustrating, time-wasting, major hassle. Also, gas-operated saws are loud and stink. I seldom use my Stihl saw any more. The Greenworks saw is much, much easier to operate. No external tools are needed to replace a chain or even the chain bar. Everything that you need to use is contained in the saw. The design engineers at Greenworks have done an outstanding job in creating a relatively easy-to-use, modern chain saw. You just use your fingers to pop in a charged battery, fill up the reservoir with chain bar oil, and away you go!The electric saw isn't quite as powerful as its gas-powered counterpart, so you may need to cut a bit more slowly. However, you will more than make up for this by not having to tinker with a fussy gas-powered saw.I recommend that you get a couple if spare batteries to go with this saw as well as some spare chains. This will save you much time and hassle when you are busy in a tree-cutting project. I also keep a half gallon of chain bar oil handy, because the saw needs oil to run the chain. This one uses a fair amount. However, chain bar oil is pretty cheap and with this saw you don't have to mix oil and gas or buy special, expensive canned fuel....it's battery powered, remember?A couple of folks have commented about how the chain may slip off the chain bar. That happens. It happens to my Stihl saw, too. You can reduce the frequency by keeping moderate tension on the chain. Also, avoid using the saw to cut thin, green, reed-like limbs, the ones that are 1/4 inch or less in diameter. They are flexible and seem to pull off the chain. For those, I keep a hand sheer in my pocket. Problem solved. Do keep in mind that this is a chain, not a toy. If you are inexperienced with chain saws, you will want to practice using it before you jump into a big project. Be careful, be patient. If after practice you are still having a lot of trouble using this saw, you may want to ask a professional tree-trimming service to take over your project.Gas-powered saws belong in the museum, in my opinion. Their technology is about 100 years old. Their design isn't nearly as modern or convenient as their battery-powered competition. The battery-powered saws are already very good and will likely continue to improve in the future. Finally, the Greenworks 16 inch battery-powered saw sells for a fraction of the cost of the Stihl gas-powred saw. So why waste your money on a product that is fussy, unreliable, smelly, loud, and expensive? Stihl chainsaws are over-rated, in my opinion. Go Greenworks!I'm attaching a few photos of a recent yard clean-up project. You can see for yourself how powerful this battery-powered saw is. I used two charged batteries to cut all of that wood.

TL;DR - I used to work for a tree service for 10 years. The saw is amazing. It's light, fast, and simple. It's not a replacement for a big gas saw. It cuts slower than a similarly priced gas saw and is less powerful, but it is still very capable and is my go to saw for backcountry trail work days.WHY I WANTED ELECTRIC:I used to cut trees down for a living many years ago, but now I work with a volunteer organization that helps maintain National Forest trails in our beautiful forest around Pagosa Springs in Southwest Colorado. Jetting the carb on our old saw for the right altitude was always an issue. If it ran great at the shop in town at 7K is would barely crank at 11K feet and up. Another issue with the big gas saw was the constant cranking in between cuts. Often times we have trees spaced out at random intervals that seem just long enough to kill the saw, but the constant cranking during a work day gets old quick. And as if the gas saw isn't heavy enough on it's own, we are required to carry a fire extinguisher along with the gas and oil in case we start a fire.MY EXPERIENCE WITH ELECTRIC:Fast forward to our current GreenWorks ownership. I have a backpack that fits the saw perfectly with the sheathed blade sticking out the top. I can cover long distances very quickly since it weighs so little. During times where the trees are intermittent, I simply tap the power switch off and walk to the next one. With a quick press of the power, I'm back to cutting instantly with NO CRANKING! Altitude is now no longer an issue for us at all.CONS:There are downsides to the saw that you do need to be aware of, but none of them even matter with how easy this saw has made backcountry trail clearing for me.Blade - The blade/chain are narrower than a Stihl or Husky of this length would be. It has some flex to the bar because of this and will surely not withstand much abuse from improper handling. Be careful with the blade and you'll be fine.Power - The saw simply doesn't have the power of a good gas saw. It's incredibly capable, but if the cut you are making is closing in on you it will sometimes beep and stall, signalling that you don't have enough power. I've found that once you learn the limits of the saw and if you use good cutting technique that you'll be fine.BATTERY - The large 4 amp hour battery doesn't last a full workday. It does seem to last longer than a tank of gas would for our 20 inch saw, but you still need to plan a recharge lunch break or pack an extra battery if the work goes long. I've found the saw to be most efficient when making small 3 to 6 inch cuts with tiny cool down breaks in between cuts. The battery seems to be used up the most quickly by making back to back cuts on large trees that require you to cut from both sides to complete the cut. When we have over 3 trees larger than 20 inches on a work day is when we'll also bring along the big gas saw.RECOMMENDED USAGE:Remote Trail Work or Tree Cutting!Anywhere that light weight matters more than speed of cutting!Intermittent use with trees 28" and underShort firewood gathering tripsAs an emergency tool that you keep in your car for remote trips or during winter!

8/22/26 - adding again-reduced rating since I expected this to be a light to Medium duty saw. It's light only. Tried to cut a 8-10" dead tree down and it just overheated instantly. Talking 1-1.5 minutes. Not jammed/stick, overheated and shut down. Tried a few more cuts and just shut down instantly each time even after waiting a minute or 2. Stuck the battery in the charger and it showed over heated. Yes the battery was full and out of the charger few an hour or 2 also. and I have only used this saw about a total of 2 hour so far. I'll take as a learning experience again. Going back to gas now. I know they work even though can be a pain to start. and they are cheaper for a 18-20" size too for a basic model. I wouldn't even try a 60V. Maybe a 80V may be worth a darn but 60v is not.4/3/26 For a 16" saw it should be able to cut more than 3 rounds of a 10-12" tree trunk. This was a 16' long trunk and it would stop cutting after only 3 cuts and the battery still showed 2-3 bars. it would just stop/overload at 2 bars. I guess that is what you get out of a 40v battery with 4ah. I would recommend a 60v at minimum if you need this often or even yearly on a regular basis even for smaller jobs. On recharge #4 to try and finish this up. Took 5 charges to cut down too. So probably best for branches up to 6" at best. Next time I have a job like this, not often, I'll probably borrow a gas saw for the job.

That nice product

Great little saw. Cut down 11 medium sized trees the first day. Barely used any battery life. Very sturdy product.

I ordered this green works 16” chainsaw. Once it arrived it would not tighten the chain . The knob for tightening the chain is defective . I have requested a refund from the Seller and have not heard back from the seller YEERAS in over three weeks.I am left with a lemon and have no way to cut my winter firewood, and have been ripped off over $400 .Amazon has no option to contact them to make a formal complaint. The seller has left and I have no way to get my refund for a no good , defective item that will not cut wood.

works awesome and exactly as per other review. thanks
