Husaria Ambassador Wooden Chess Set, 21.7 in

This is the best chess set I have ever had the pleasure of playing on. Given, I'm not a seasoned player. I own a smaller Elementi magnetic set, I've played on a hand crafted set with ceramic pieces (wood is better. ceramic looks pretty, but makes you scared to handle the pieces.) I also have two goofy themed chess sets with plastic and cardstock. This though? I loved this so much after four games I just had to review it. The Size: This board is a little over 20 x 20 inches. Now that is BIG. If you do not want a big board, this is not for you. I, however, wanted the size. Everyone who has played on this board comments on how pleasant the size is, how easy it is to see everything and handle the pieces. So if you want big, this chess board is, in fact, Big. The Weight These pieces are not magnetic or weighted, but they don't even really need to be. These pieces are built with very chunky bases, which helps them stay upright. I'm used to pawns being annoyingly dainty, so these pawns having such a large base is a huge plus. The king and queen have weight at the top, but the base is so substantial that they still do not tip easy. If you really want weighted and magnetic that bad, I suppose you could modify the board and pieces to suit you. The pieces are certainly big enough to add a bolt on the inside of the base and cover with felt. But... I emphasize that you really don't need to do that. I love magnetic like crazy. It just... doesn't feel necessary with this set because the pieces have such natural weight and large bases. Build and Material (The Look) Husaria really made a beautiful board here. The woods chosen have a higher contrast in color. The pyrography gives a three dimensionality to the board that makes it even better to look at in person. Oh right, have I mentioned that this board is just nice to LOOK at? I personally love the imperfections in the hand done pyrography. It gives the board such warmth and character that you can't help but stare. Really, you just want to play a game on this board, win or lose, because it's just such a delight. The build quality is splendid. The seam of the folding part disappears into the pyrography between the squares. (which again give the board texture and three dimensionality. it's something you really have to see in person to appreciate.) The latches have a lot of hold, and don't come off unless you want them to. The inside felt definitely could be better. It's plastic with felt on it. It gets the job done. It does not take away from the five stars however. Why? Because you're paying for the*board and pieces* here. The plastic felt piece holders are perfectly replaceable with your foam of choice, so this is not a con. TL;DR Version If you want a nice chess set for at home that has a nice feel across multiple games, and doesn't need magnets or weights to feel good. It looks BEAUTIFUL. Good craftsmanship, has character, and your family Will comment on how nice it is to play on. Ask me how I know.

We are enjoying this chess set. Very pretty and the while the pieces are weighted, they're still nice and the size is great. Wish there was some felt around the edges so it wouldn't scratch my surface but easy enough for me to add some.

This is a very large set with a beautifully handmade chess board and large, ornate chess pieces. It does not come with extra Queens, and although the pieces are not weighted they're made of wood and are large enough to have a pleasant enough weight to them already. To be honest, the price was so reasonable for this set that I really just bought it for the chess board itself. I plan on buying a separate set of pieces that are tournament size and weight with extra Queens. Either way, this is a beautiful set for travel or to play outside with friends. Terrific price! Well made! Nuff said!

My grandsons immediately mentioned how much they loved the size and feel of the sets pieces. I purposefully selected a wood set for the aesthetics and it did not disappoint. I was disappointed with the quality of the storage area. I was expecting a nice felt interior and it has more of a plastic feel. Despise other reviews stating that there was visible glue on some of the pieces after inspection I found no issues. Overall very satisfied with the product.

I bought this as a gift for my brother who needed a new chess board. He had the same one for years. This was way better than I had expected. The pieces are light but I actually like that. Their absolutely beautiful and so is the board. I’m usually not a fan of the boards that fold in half but my brother has a small one bedroom apartment that doesn’t have a lot of space so it is perfect for him. This was well worth the money and I would recommend this to anyone that wants a chessboard that looks gorgeous but also is good quality.

Beautifully crafted

This chess set was purchased as a gift. The underside of the pieces are covered with felt which allows them to glide across the board. There is a slight smell of varnish to the set and a sand-like roughness to the surface of the pieces. We believe these things are due to the fact that the set is handcrafted. None of this detracts from the fact that this chess set -board and figures- is absolutely BEAUTIFUL and I'm glad I bought it. its well worth the cost.

I’ve had the set for almost a couple months now. This set reminds me of the set my Dad and I used to play each other on when I was a kid. He taught me how to play chess on a board that was a bit smaller than this one. Love the craftsmanship. Very nice quality. The pieces are a very nice size in the hand. Now if I could only find someone who enjoys playing chess as much as I do.
