There are better options
The book is very basic. It's likely found useful by people who have no clue about book design or publishing. It reads like a magazine. Look closer it actually is produced by a magazine company. There are useful informations to benefit from throughout the book. But the presentation is overall lack of insights. Here are a few better options to consider:APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur-How to Publish a BookDesign of Books by Wilson, AdrianThe Publishing Business (Creative Careers)Book Design (abrams studio)Bookmaking: Editing, Design, Production (Third Edition)

this book is a complete waste of money
Unless you know absolutely nothing about publishing, this book is a complete waste of money. About 98% of what's here is outdated, because technology has advanced lightyears since this book was written. If the author would write a new, updated edition, I'd certainly consider buying it--the author is good. BUT IF YOU NEED CURRENT INFORMATION, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

A Good General Guide But You'll Need More Specifics
I picked up this third edition with apprehension after reading the reviews of the book's second edition, which were very mixed over whether the book was worthwhile.Whether Entrepreneur Press went out of its way to answer the critics, or whether a change in author made a difference, I can't tell, but I can say that a lot of the criticism of the second edition seems to have been addressed (just from reading the Amazon reviews -- I never read the second edition).Author Cheryl Kimball does a decent job in laying out the self-publishing world, and what a person must do to get started. This book very much has a workmanlike feel to it, as if Kimball were given an assignment, maybe even an outline, and she dutifully dug up info to fill in the blanks. There's no sense or real indication that Kimball herself has done any self-publishing. If she has, she certainly doesn't use many examples from her own career to illustrate what needs to be done. (Looking at the other titles she has written, they range from ''The Everything Horse Book'' to ''Start Your Own Florist Shop,'' so it may indeed be that her direct experience of self-publishing is limited). The book does give a lot of useful, basic information for someone who is new to the subject, but there are so many self-publishing books out there by people who have made a career in the field that it's hard to say that this book would be my No.1 recommendation for anyone who is seriously considering a self-publishing business.I recommend this only for people who are just looking into self-publishing to see if it's something they might want to do, to be read as a general guide before moving onto more informative books. For more of my reviews please search for goldenrulecomics on hubpages.com.
