Sommer 1042V003 Direct Drive 3/4 Hp Garage Door Opener Incl. Wireless Keypad"New". Quiet. Durable. Strong

I bought this as a replacement unit for the original one in my older house and I am highly pleased with it. This new one is incredibly quiet, much quieter but slightly slower than the original. It stops much more accurately than the original too (it has very precise positioning). My leisurely self-install took the better part of a day, mostly because I had to take numerous breaks to get away from the California summer heat in the garage! The instructions are well written and easy to follow, taking my time, step-by-step. The old unit did not have optical sensors, so when I installed the ones that came with this unit I had to run the wires for those, and the supplied wires for those were about 2 yards (meters) short. Fortunately the wire supplied for the wall switch was longer than needed so I just spliced in that wire to solve that problem. I would have been happier if they had supplied angle iron for mounting at the head unit end, rather than simple holed steel straps, The straps flex a bit under the torque of the motor, and the result is that the unit moves around a little (very little) when it is activated, rather than being completely rigid. The perfectionist side of me does not like that but it works perfectly well.

Having two story house with small kids' bedroom right above the garage, I was looking for a garage door opener that is a little better than my 7 year old Wayne Dalton Quantum (pre-installed by builder). Whenever Wayne Dalton was working it always felt like a small earthquake if you are on second floor of the house. The chain based opener might be reliable but is extremely noisy.I've looked at various models of Chamberlain and Genie belt drives and found their assembly instructions overly complicated. There were just too many parts involved. While it sounds like a cool idea with Chamberlain's MyQ interface, it felt over-engineered and overloaded with features (not a good thing if you are looking for long term reliability). Having plastic gears in the motor was deal killer for me. Hence, I chose this Sommer unit.Amazon had the best price and fast delivery of the Sommer/Direct Drive opener.I was glad that I decided to perform installation myself as I found numerous corners cut by my builder during installation of my previous opener (short bolts for ceiling, no proper header support, photo-sensors positioned too low, wires just hanging all over the place, etc).It took me several hours over the weekend to take down the old opener and install the new one. I didn't want to rush the process to make sure everything is done right. My main concern was the length of rails since I have 8' door in my garage and I measured that the actual travel distance by the carriage of the old opener was close to 8'5".After everything was in place, I was stunned by extremely silent operation of the opener. The only thing making noise is the door itself and door rails attached to the ceiling. Absolutely quiet.My only wish for improvement on Sommer USA end is to remove the differentiation between retail and professional model lines for the opener. It only creates a confusion. Rail length is all different between retail and professional models and makes it hard to know which model you are getting. Also having two separate websites (sommer-usa and directdriveopener) - is just silly and great way to confuse customers.P.S. Homelink worked without problems paired with my Honda Odyssey. See homelink website for their latest instructions. In short, press all 3 buttons and hold them until the light goes OFF (very important). Then press Learn button on the control unit of the opener and quickly (under 10 seconds) press desired button on the homelink and hold it until it stops flashing. That's it!

I have had this product for over two years. It was easy to install and runs much more quietly than our previous opener. I had a problem with the wireless function and the warrantee covered replacing a board. Wireless worked again. I do find the distance of the wireless less than my prior opener. My new problem is with the keyless entry. There is a security feature that disables the wireless keypad from operating if someone entered the code several times. The timer requires a wait period to reset before trying again. Unfortunately, this seems to be causing problems now when the garage was opened by the wired remote. Hoping there is a fix.

Installed it about 3 weeks ago. The installation went well despite the reviews that were posted. My keypad works great and my remotes open and close the door. It is EXTREMELY quiet. It is slow but I have two small dogs and I have always been afraid that if i hit the close button they would get caught in the garage door. This door allows enough time for them to run in .....once they hear the sound. The quality for the price can't be beat. I researched and shopped Craigs list and every Big Box store. I found this to be a great find and a great product. If you want quiet this is the door for you, if you are in an extreme hurry and cant chill for a few seconds then it is not the door for you. We are very happy.

This direct drive garage door opener lasted us 5 years before burning up. We have a small two car garage and during those 5 years it worked well. It would stop working occasionally (perhaps 3-4 times during those 5 years) but after resetting it and walking it through the “learn” process it would begin working again. Today it stopped working so I reset it, but it still wouldn’t work. After three more tries it finally started working; however, after a few up/down cycles it stopped again. After a few more resets it started working, so I cycled it about four more times to be sure. As the door was coming up I noticed little wisps of smoke coming out of the top of the housing. After that it definitely stopped working. I unplugged it and will replace it with a different brand. 1 star for 5 years of service instead of 10. +1 star for being so quiet you almost couldn’t hear it indoors.
