it seems pretty handy, but its actually somewhat difficult to get sparks from this thing compared to most flints. its nice if you want something that is very compact though, i put this in a small box so for its main purpose, its thin form factor suits the needs i have.

Thin and small but fits well in small survival kits. While well designed I would expect it to only fill an emergency use as it will wear away with prolonger use. I'm certain it would last a few weeks and little more if constantly used - make it a backup!

Accessible emergency tool
Very handy emergency tool. Just shave off some magnesium onto some kindling with the attached striker, and then strike the bar. The whistle is also really loud. I'm confident this thing can save your life. The only downside is that the magnesium bar is not glued to the plastic housing very well. Mine fell off when I dropped my keys. I glued it back on with Locktite and now it's good to go.

FALLS APART, poor construction... BUT workable
I have purchased several of these. My girlfriend and I both put them on our keychains and we both had the same problem: the ferrocerium flint rods fell off within 2 weeks of normal carry. This is a great concept for an EDC survival tool. The whistle is extremely effective and, as long as the ferro rod is firmly attached, the striker will produce an impressive shower of sparks. (Note: as with ALL ferro rods, it will produce a lot more sparks after the black coating is scraped off.)No matter how good the concept, the unreliable fusion of the ferro rod to the tool is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. Tool Logic should recall this item and improve upon it before they sell any more units. (Unfortunately, I don't think they will do this as this problem has persisted for the last couple of years with no improvement.)The reviewer that gave this item 5 stars must work for Tool Logic.HOWEVER, I HAVE had success fixing this tool for myself using Super Glue.If you have one of these units, I recommend you force the ferro rod to pop off (it shouldn't be too hard). Then, scrape the black coating off one side of the rod (longways) so you have a rough silver surface. Then apply a generous amount of Super Glue or Krazy Glue to the side of the tool and reattach the rod in its original position. This is what I did and, unlike one of the other reviewers who claims he tried this, it worked very well for me. After being reattached, the ferro rod has stayed firmly in place for over a year on my keychain. Also, if you have one of these units and the ferro rod fell off, you can send it back to Tool Logic/SOG for a free replacement. (You have to pay for shipping.)Regardless of the fact the item can be "fixed" and regardless of the warranty coverage, I have to give this item 1 star. I really hope Tool Logic will improve upon this item soon. In general, I am a fan of Tool Logic/SOG...

Poor Quality, but Workable
Normally a fan of SOG products, I cannot recommend this tool. The ferrocerium rod came fell off after a few days of jostling around in my pocket. I purchased the Flint Rod Fire Starter lighter Ferrocerium Stone Magnesium Survival 5/16" from Amazon, cut it to length, sanded the SOG tool, and epoxied the new rod in place. It has withstood abuse for the past several months with no issues--why couldn't SOG have done this to begin with? The whistle is adequate and the metal striker is fine, but I have gotten just as good sparks with a knife or a housekey. This is a handy tool, but unless you are prepared for a modification/repair, I cannot recommend this as a purchase as-is.

Nice whistle
I like the idea and product. My only issue is the fire starter rod fell off after a week. I used super glue to re attach and that seems to be holding so far.

Perfect for a Altoids type Survival Kit!!
I was looking for a whistle to put in my Altoids type Survival Kit I was putting together. This whistle did that and more. It is flat which means it does not take a lot of space in the can, and it has a magnesium fire starter. I do believe that if I tried to use this as a key chain attachment, the Ferol rod would fall off. With that said, do not let that stop you from purchasing this item. The tool is black, and so is electrical tape. Some well placed tape would prevent this from happening. Otherwise, this product is perfect for what I wanted and I did purchase a few of them, and I will be purchasing more in the future. Oh yeah, the whistle is very loud. I would recommend this product and again, I will be purchasing more.

Great little tool.
I'm very happy with this product. The whistle is loud and I took the advice of another reviewer and wrapped some electrical tape around the "SOG" to doubly secure the stick just in case. I've not used it to start a fire but it's comparable to other fire starters I've used in the past.

Tool Logic Firestarter and Whistle
My initial impression of this out of the box was good. The whistle is extremely loud, the magnesium fire starter worked great, and I was impressed with how solid the serrated striker connected to the main body wince it has the keyring on it.With the price you pay for them, I felt I had made a great purchase. After testing everything out to make sure it worked, I put it down on the table. It must have gotten knocked off, because about 10 minutes later my dog came up to me with the magnesium rod in its mouth...it had fallen off the keyring. This is the second time I have purchased a Tool Logic product, and the second time shoddy craftsmanship has been an issue.Previously I had to return a Credit Card Tool because the compass didn't work.I decided to repair this one by sanding down the groove where the magnesium rod had been inserted to get the remaining glue out, and used Gorilla Super Glue to reattach the magnesium rod, putting the side that already had markings from the striker down to encourage better adhesion. This is a great product to carry on your keychain and at a good price, but Tool Logic quality leaves something to be desired when you have to make repairs within 15 mins of taking it out of the box.

Great EDC item.
Good compact whistle and ferocium rod with stricker. Nice and thin. Hardly notice it on my keychain. The only thing is that the ferocity rod can off and the part that is suppose to buckle off is too loose and it comes off my key chain too easily. I used gorilla glue to fixe the rod and carefully bent the buckle to be more secure. Since I did the above I have had not problems.I also contacted sog and they were willing to replace it free of charge and took my comments seriously. I didn't return it because my fixes are still working after 6 months with no problems.

One Star
Ferro rod broke off after 1 week of being on keychain. Not something that you can rely on.

It's OK..just not durable enough to keep with you..falls apart.
This is designed as a keychain, so it should hold up in your pocket attached to keys, no? The magnesium rod fell out when the glue failed about a month after I bought it, and the scraper portion that detaches where your keys connect doesn't stay affixed, so you may well lose it. The whistle is bloody loud though, I'll give them that. A little better design is called for I guess... maybe a metal body? You want it so you have it in an emergency, with you, in your pocket. By the time you needed it, it's in pieces.
