BINESHII BIRCH BARK CANOES ARE ON DISPLAY AT THE SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM IN WASHINGTON D.C. (Minnesota. Tribal I.D. #408B23246.) Bineshii birch bark canoes are expertly handcrafted by Ojibwe elders on the Leech Indian Reservation located in Northern Minnesota in the Village of Cass Lake. They are created to scale of a full size Ojibwe canoe. This scale gives it a great visual sense of proportion to the full size canoes used for hundreds of years by the Ojibwe Indians. This birch bark canoe is approximately 36" long, 8.5" wide at the inside center, 5.5" deep, and 10.5" high at each end. These are not hobby canoes they are crafted in the traditional Ojibwe manner as has been the custom for generations. This unique craftsmanship takes many years to learn. The creation of these canoes involves many steps and takes several weeks to create. It is made of thick and heavy birch bark, trimmed with willow sticks, and hand peeled basswood sinew. The peeled basswood is taken from the inside of the basswood tree. It is sewn when wet and as it dries it tightens binding the birch bark. This process is a real art form to learn. If sewn to tight when wet the canoe will warp, if sewn to loose the canoe will not take its shape. The elders peel the bark of the birch tree to the perfect depth so the bark comes back within three years. This process does not harm the beautiful birch tree. OUR BIRCH BARK CANOES CAN ONLY BE CREATED DURING THE BIRCH BARK CUTTING SEASON. (USUALLY STARTING DURING THE FIRST WEEK IN JUNE UNTIL SEPTEMBER FIRST) THIS LIMITS US TO THE QUANTITY WE CAN CREATE EACH YEAR FOR OUR CUSTOMERS.
