Does the shielding have to be grounded inside of guitar?

I think so. the braided shielding on all wires in my guitar is grounded at some point. Either way, I used the braided shield as a ground lead and the main wire inside to connect to lugs on pots and jacks. Hope that helps

You can use .22 gauge stranded wire for an alternative. It just requires that you run 2 wires.
