Can this unit be up against a wall or does it require space behind it to operate properly?

Yes. It can be against a wall...air comes in the sides then it is expelled thru the top. Fyi mine broke within 2 weeks. I sent it back for full refund thru Amazon. The air was so fresh in my home...because of that that I have ordered the Alen Breathsmart classic that is an older model...I hope it lasts. They do have a lifetime warranty but a new product should not break right away. This 75i was a new model that I think they need to fix.

if running 24/7 does it make a huge increase in electric bill?

Does this produce any ozone?

Ozone is a by-product of any negative ion purifier. This specific model is rated as safe by the California product committee. Still, I would probably err on the side of not running that specific feature on the purifier, especially if someone in the home has known respiratory problems. Ozone is known to irritate lung tissue.
