Logic Pro X - How it Works: A new type of manual - the visual approach

The book that unlocked Logic and AMS for me
This book is far and away the best explanation of Logic Pro that I have found. Logic has the deserved reputation for being a powerful but obscure program, especially to non-professional musicians like me. The book begins with an explanation of Logic's architecture using an excellent analogy, and I found understanding the architecture to be key to understanding Logic's multifaceted and obscure UI.Edgar also offers an explanation of Audio Midi Setup in the Free Manuals section of his website. While this old document has many typos, it is also an excellent description of how Audio Midi Setup works, especially with regard to Network MIDI connections. After many attempts to get it working, Edgar's explanation helped me understand the architecture of this as well. I finally have Logic playing my MIDI gear over the network.Get this book, and get the MIDI description from his website. You won't regret it. I'll be buying Edgar's Logic Pro X - The Details as soon as it is available.

Great book. But not what I thought I was getting.
This book is fantastic for someone that wants to know exactly what is on the software and how it works. But it does not give you step by step instructions on how each to use the individual applications of the program. Such as how to record your own voice and create harmonies. Which is what I was hoping for. That information will hopefully be in the follow-up book. Which is set to be released soon. I hope. So if you want to know the behind the scenes of everything you can click on, I highly recommend this book.

One of the best software books I've ever seen! Very useful!
This graphically enhanced manual really is superior to anything I've ever tried to read in the realm of a software tutorial book. Edgar explains things really well and the use of the numbering system to bring you exactly to where in the graphic the words on the page are describing is really a wonderful tool. I would encourage Edgar in the future to use different shapes and colors for these link symbols. The book I purchased utilizes numbers 1 thru whatever may be necessary in a black circle. It is sometimes difficult to find the number in the graphic and perhaps if different colors or shapes were used that might be easier but this is still a 5 star book.

More Reference Than Actual Doing - Lots of Reading But No Application
Before I get into my review I want to be clear that everyone learns differently and I don’t want to discount other customers’ reviews. However, this book is not very useful for me. I’m on page 100 now, reading page by page as was recommended by the author and all I’ve done so far is open the app up and create a default project. Yes, the deep explanation and description of each and every UI element in the application is great but it doesn’t piece the elements together into a workflow. From Amazon’s detail page the product description is:“[GEM is a] new type of manual with a visual approach that helps you UNDERSTAND a program, not just LEARN it. No need to read through 500 of pages of dry text explanations. Rich graphics and diagrams help you to get that "aha" effect and make it easy to comprehend difficult concepts. The Graphically Enhanced Manuals help you master a program much faster with a much deeper understanding of concepts, features and workflows in a very intuitive way that is easy to understand.”Then from the Introduction - My Approach section of the book the author goes on to write:"Other manuals (original documentations or third party books) often provide just a quick way to: “press here and then click there, then that will happen … now click over there and something else will happen”. This will go on for the next couple hundred pages and all you’ll do is memorized lots of steps without understanding the reason for doing them in the first place. Even more problematic is that you are stuck when you try to perform a procedure and the promised outcome doesn’t happen. You will have no understanding why it didn’t happen and, most importantly, what to do in order to make it happen.”However, for me the book does exactly what the author and publisher describe SHOULD NOT happen as I read this book. I’ve gone through 100 pages of detailed descriptions about each control and yet I have no idea how to apply these to an actual project. I would like to see the author create a project and build it up as he explains the controls. In this manner the reader can actually APPLY WHAT THEY LEARNED as they go along instead of storing hundreds of snippets of information that have limited relation in a reference approach. Having been in education for over a dozen years, my experiences tells me that most people learn from doing, not just reading and unfortunately this book is more the latter in direct contrast to its claims. There hasn’t been anything “done” yet in the book that allows the reader to apply what the book is trying to teach them.I would say that this book is a good overall reference guide, but not a “How It Works” book. Yes, it explains what each control does, but not how it works in the context of an actual project.

these GEM books are amazing, so much better than all the other Logic ...
I must say, these GEM books are amazing, so much better than all the other Logic books that I've seen that just explain one feature after another and are often very dry to read through. I started with Logic last year and I'm glad I found these GEM books. Their visual approach is more engaging and I actually understand the features and functionality and can implement them right away. This makes the learning process so much easier, and there is a lot to learn. If you want to learn Logic I can highly recommend this book.

Not for anyone I would know.
I hate to be so negative when it’s obvious someone has put in a lot of work on something, but this book isn’t very helpful. This book does not explain how to do anything; in fact, it sticks to it’s title completely. Unfortunately, this book read like a mildly improved version of the help files provided for Logic Pro X online with quite a few “plugs” for his next book, which I assume is where the explains the why and wherefore for each piece so thoroughly described in this book (which I have decided to not read based on this book). Also, no index in a book that is supposed to be a reference to a multifaceted, complex program? That’s absurd—shamefully absurd.

Perfect Learning Tool
I'm in the process of switching from DP to Logic and came across these books in the Graphically Enhanced Manuals series. One thing I realized right away are all the graphics and diagrams that you usually don't find in a typical user manual for software apps. I know how a sequencer works, but I had to find out how Logic works differently than the one I'm used to. Those diagrams make it very clear and I'm up and running in no time. Its visual!! This is the way to learn an app. Highly recommended.

Interesting
This is quite a good book for Logic newbies like me. It does explain the concepts of Logic X Pro well and is well illustrated. The main thing that I would have liked in this book would have been a number of worked examples of setting up projects to bring the concepts to life, otherwise it is a very good book.

over complex explanations.
No use to those who do not need to know the inner workings of logic pro x. the style is also confusing: very detailed, and nearly unreadable at times. Does not cover many crucial points.

re pro logic how it works
very poorly explained at times . in most cases it tells you what it can do , NOT how to do it . it seems to be pushing you to buy next book to tell you how to work it properly I wont be buying it its probably more of same sorry but im very disappointed in it con
