will this work for an xbow one?

Short answer: YES I have just received my adapter and plugged it into the back of my Xbox One and have verified that the video and audio worked. My concern was if the form factor would fit into the HDMI out port that is located next to the large power connector. I can report that it fits perfectly and has plenty of room for the VGA adapter to plug into it and not disturb the power connector. I'll repeat this answer in my review and include a photo of everything connected. I can say that the form factor for this is solidly built. It also comes with a male-to-male 3.5mm audio cable that is about 3ft (1m) long (that I didn't use in the photo).

My monitor has no speakers. when i play xbox one i can only hear game chat on my mic, nothing else. how do i get sound to come out using this?

Please connect your audio receiver(speakers, amplifiers) to this audio jack when connecting your TV/Monitor via VGA port, then you can get the sound out.

Can this adapter be used to connect a blu-ray player to a monitor with the vga input? if so, how would one that just audio volume?

Blue ray players tend to have their own volume settings, in case you did not know. Anything that outputs HDMI will with with this.
