The lens out of the box feels high quality, much more than the standard Sony EF lenses, not the G or GM. The lens has a nice “heavy” metal body and smooth focal ring that feels great. The packaging surprisingly was great. The lens itself creates quite stunning pictures for its price. The clarity of it is better than expected and performs well. Has a usbc input for updating the firmware/software as your camera updates. Over all so far the lens was a great purchase. The AF on my Sony A7iv works flawlessly out of the box and is fast focus speed. Overall a good buy for a intro level good lens for your professional camera.

Not sure how the hell Viltrox pulled this off, but they created a real gem with this lens. It's seemingly well made, being mostly metal (as far as I can tell) and quite substantial feeling. It's also quite heavy, but not enough to make an A7-series body feel unbalanced. AF is fast, generally quite accurate, and quiet. It does tend to hunt a bit in lower light situations, especially when stopped down a bit, but it's not a huge issue in most cases. Image quality is a lot better than I had expected, especially in terms of sharpness in the center of the frame. Wide open, it's acceptably sharp...but stopped down to f/2.8 it really gets super-sharp. Even f/2.2 is noticeably improved over f/1.8. Color rendition looks fine to me, but I don't pay a lot of attention to that sort of thing. Vignetting is noticeable up to about f/4 (or maybe 5.6), but it is not egregious and is easily corrected in post processing. Chromatic aberration is surprisingly well controlled, even at maximum aperture. I bought this instead of the Sony 85mm, and I'm damn glad I did.

AF is quick and MF feels good. Pictures are sharp.

This is a surprisingly good lens. Great image quality and performance of auto focus. The only thing to be aware of is that the firmware of the lens occasionally makes it a little finicky (e.g. it isn’t immediately recognized by my Sony a7iii). But this doesn’t happen often and it’s easy to fix by just taking the lens off and putting it back on. Overall a great lens, especially for the price!

I’m using this lens on my A6600. I like the weight and compact format, and it is decently sharp when it hits focus. However, even when using this lens on a static subject (portraits), the AF has trouble staying locked on. The camera is tracking the eye with EyeAF but the lens seems to hunt backwards and forwards around the focus point. This is on the latest firmware 1.1.7 as of this review. In a recent shoot I probably had around 80-90% hit rate, in the same lighting conditions with my Sigma and Sony lenses I usually have 100% hit rate. If they could fix the AF, this lens would be a no-brainer in terms of value, but with the AF in the current state I’d probably rather get a used Sony 85mm for a similar price so I don’t lose any shots

A great lens at a great price. I can't comment on how it compares with a Sony lens, G, GM, GM2, whatever. I needed a faster lens than my F4 zoom, and though a longer lens like the 135mm would have been great, it would not be as versatile as this 85. As well, using the camera's crop/zoom feature, the 85 becomes a 127.5mm lens at 24 Megapixels, versus the fullframe 61 Megapixels. Good enough when your subject is already larger in frame. It's fast, sharp, and light. Comes well-packaged.

Lente muito boa, tem ótima nitidez, contrastes finos e elegantes, deixa um lindo desfoque de fundo, só peca um pouco na perca do foco continuo mas dá pra passa despercebido. Em fim por em quanto valeu a pena, vamos ver daqui a alguns meses ou anos.

I received the lens after 10 days of order. The pack was perfectly sealed and protected. Yet, the lens cap jammed onto the lens chassis in front. It was but a hassle to get it off after sometime of push & pull techniques. Build quality is superb. All metal and sturdy. It’s on a bit heavier side compared to Sony’s 50mm or 85mm. But can live with it. Image quality is awesome and I can’t complain anything about it. Portraits looks awesome. I am not a professional though the images I get from my AIII using this lens looks very flattering. Bokeh it produces is very eye pleasing. Auto focus is smooth but not super fast. Expect a bit lag. Overall a better lens at affordable price. I suggest buy this lens with camera body instead of other kit lenses. You can use this one lens for most of the purposes.

Its an amazing lens for Sony E-mount cameras, especially for portrait photography. The autofocus is fast and accurate, and the background blur looks smooth and professional. The images come out sharp even in low light thanks to the wide F1.8 aperture. It feels well-built yet lightweight to carry around. A great affordable alternative to more expensive lenses!

Perfect for portrait and nature photography. Video quality is good.
