Smarthome SELECT Water Leak Detection Alarm - 71631

We haven't had another leak in our basement so the 2 alarms I purchased have not been tested in a real world flood yet, but they tested fine with the wet finger test and should be loud enough to be heard upstairs in our main house.

Saved me thousands in repairs! Bought this thinking I'd likely never see it in action, but to my surprise about 3 months after dropping it under the hot water heater that supplies the kitchen and laundry room, my wife called me at work and said there was an alarm going off but she couldn't tell where. I paused for a second then thought of this and said to go look in the closet that houses the hot water heater in the garage. Sure enough, the top inlet pipe on the heater had a hairline crack at the connector and water was running down the side of the heater to the floor! She cut the supply off and called a plumber immediately. Had the alarm not gone off, I could see this easily doing thousands of damage to the flooring and drywall in both the garage where the heater was, but also into the kitchen that's on the other side of the wall! There was barely any water around the heater, that's how quickly it detected the leak! Highly recommend!

This product did not work at all for me. I installed the battery and tried testing it, but the alarm did not go off. I then installed another battery and submerged it in 1/2 inch of water, and it still did not sound. I was going to return it, but it seems like I can no longer. It looks like this product has many great reviews, but unfortunately, the product I received was probably a dud.

Excellent little detector. So simple and so effective. It's nice and loud as well. I've had no problems with it. It works exactly as it is described to work.

Everyone should have one! No 'surprises' under the sink.UPDATE: I cannot recommend this product anymore. Unfortunately after less than 1 year of being under the sink, it stopped working. I changed the battery but it still doesn't work. I'm very surprised at the quality considering the price...but I just might have gotten a 'dud'. I am a huge fan of these devices; so just expressing my own experience and will be buying another brand which I've used before but is more bulky.

Ok, but not great. The Honeywell $10 unit is better. This unit works, but the alarm isn't all that loud. If you put it in your basement, you will never hear it upstairs. No switch to disarm the unit. I've owned two of these. They are about the size of a can of tuna fish.

Seems to be a very good value. I've used other Smarthome products and always been very satisfied. I bought several to use in different areas where I have experienced leaks in the past. Have not had any leaks so far to see how well it works, but as I installed the battery, the alarm sounded from the small amount of moisture on my skin, so it seems sensitive.

Why didn't we know about these before? Great idea - especially important if you have a wood floor. We bought 4 - for under the dishwasher, under the kitchen sink, under the refrigerator (with ice maker). Last one will go under a bathroom sink. There are a couple of brands of these on the market but we chose this one because, like a smoke detector, it will sound when the battery gets low - the others did not.
