What is the purpose of the extra fabric that folds over??

The fold of fabric is for when you do not wish to allow for the thumb to be exposed. these mittens are fit for baby 8 months?

These mittens are definitely a lot larger than the ones you can find at the store, but would not do well for an 8 month old baby. They are too small for an 8 month old. I typically only use them up until the child is 6 months. Hope this helps you. :)
