Very thin but durable on a ceramic tile floor
It was tempting to lay this floor mat with the shinny side up, but the only instruction that came with this polycarbonate was to lay it with the coarse side up. Which we did. it works very well on our new ceramic flooring. The wheels on our chairs are narrow rollerblade style and they roll vey smoothly. If a wheel rolls off the mat it's not an issue because the mat is only 1/8" thick and it rolls back on easily. These mats are the solution to our flooring/chair dilemma.

Nice protector - but did not receive when promised!
This protector is sturdy, almost clear, and a great size for what I needed. It covers the floor very well and lays flat when I put it down the very first time.THE ONLY THING I DIDN'T LIKE --- I did not receive it when promised by Amazon - it was over a week late.

Awesome! But be careful not to break your neck.
So it's a nice big thin semi-transparent mat exactly as described. It comes in an extraordinarily thin cardboard box.One side of the mat is rough the other smooth and it took a moment to find the "This side up" sticker. (Rougher side up.)So you fuss around with it a little and seems like it will do the job. Cool. Then at some point there's a knock at the door or you notice your dog about to take a crap on the carpet and you launch out of your chair, push swiftly off the mat which slides and, you barely regain your balance, maybe almost pull a muscle, but all is well in the end.OR alternatively, you fall and break your neck.So far it's been the former but your mileage may vary.I'm thinking maybe a few sticky tabs on the floor side would be a nice feature. But hey, I'm only an engineer.I also live for danger so that occasional surprise when it slides out and you almost go tits up, makes life worth living and this thing a bargain.

High quality polycarbonate floor mat
The item (47" x 59") was bought as a chair mat to cover my new hard floor, which is made of "luxury vinyl tile (LVT)" that looks like hardwood planks. LVT looks great, but is less durable than real hardwood. So a floor covering to protect it from the grind of wheeled office chair is the sensible thing to do.In terms of chair mat, there are generally 2 material choices and 2 surface designs. Material choices: (1) PVC or (2) polycarbonate. I've used both before I replaced the carpet with LVT. PVC is cheaper but far less durable and not environmentally friendly (non-recyclable). I threw it away after a year and switched to polycarbonate on my carpet floor, which lasted for over 10 years before it started cracking up. I think polycarbonate is a far better investment although it's more expensive than PVC.The second is surface design choices: (1) one side with spikes and the other side smooth, or (2) one side slightly textured and the other side smooth (no spikes). Obviously (1) should be used for carpet floor, spike side down. (2) is for hard floor, and smooth side DOWN. On my new hard floor, I started with textured side down without looking at the instruction. After using the smooth side on top with my wheeled office chair for just a couple of days, scratch marks from the wheels became visible. I was disappointed and decided to read the instruction. Then I flipped the cover (as I should have to start with) with the textured side UP. Everything became perfect. The textured surface is scratch-resistant, or at least hides the scratches really well. It's non-reflective so I can see (and admire) my new hard floor quite a bit better without the glare and flare that were from the smooth surface before.Another bonus of using textured surface UP is that, when out of the box, the floor mat was rolled up with the smooth surface inside. So unfurling it with smooth surface UP tends to leave the edges curled up slightly. There's a bit annoying. After I flipped it over, the mat just seemed to "hug" the floor.Last comment: Please read the instruction even before you unfurl the mat! Keep your distance during the unfurling! You'll know what I mean when you do it. I highly recommend this item!

Hard fast rolling mat with deadly razor edges
SO the polycarbon is the rock hard mat, just be aware there will be no sound deadening with this. It rolls easy and is textured to keep rolling in control. As you may have seen all the warning about cutting yourself and opening. THIS ISNT A JOKE.When you open this it springs open with the force of a bear trap, all edges are RAZOR sharp.I pressed my rolled mat that was straining the plastic wrap keeping it secure on the ground, with my weight on top, cut free and watched in horror as the mat uncontrollable recoiled, lucky i didnt get injured but even when prepared this thing is deadly to open.Once opened i sanded the unreasonably sharp edges. It unfolded very flat, and had no issues settling flat and being usable without letting it sit.It was thinner than I expected for the money.47x59 simply put is just too large. Im glad i erred in size on the big end but keep in mind this is HUGE, you might want to actually measure and save some money.

Caution on soft flooring
Ordered this larger chair mat for new vinyl plank flooring when using a chair with casters. It was the last one and was used, very good condition with a damaged box. The box was very damaged but the mat inside was not. However this mat has a very small (maybe 1/16") sharp lip on the side that goes on the flooring and I believe it would eventually cut right through the flooring. This lip was all the way around. As it was the last mat, we made a decision to sand the lip off using ordinary fine sandpaper, rather than return the item to Amazon. Sanding was easy to do and seemed to work fine. So BEWARE if placing on soft flooring as I am sure you will eventually damage the floor.

Great for my desired use!
I wanted this mat for something a little less orthodox. I had a vinyl table protector on a wooden table that just looked cheap. Clear glossy plastic that showed ripples and wrinkles from every angle and never laid flat. I finally got rid of it and tried to find better. But all the reviews for other products had the same complaints. So I started thinking outside the box and finally found hard floor desk chair protectors. This one by Amazon Basics was decently priced and was bigger than I needed so the overly rounded corners wouldn’t be an issue.I’m so glad I convinced my wife to let me try it. The polycarbonate sprung right to near perfect flatness the moment I unwrapped it, unlike vinyl protectors. I laid in on the table and used a sharpie held to the table’s edge to trace my size. Then was able to cut fairly straight lines with aviation snips and sanded the edges to lose any sharpness. The end result is fantastic and it’s super durable. It lets the white of the table top show without me having to worry about scratches and stains from my kids. If, down the road, the kids damage this top in any way, it’s much easier to replace than the refinish the wooden tabletop. I also feel like the only way they could damage it is some sort of staining liquid that I didn’t clean off quickly. So I think this will hold up very well. I can only image it would work well for wheels of a desk chair as well.

Excellent mat for flooring. Not as great for carpet
This is a great mat. It definitely protects the surface below and is quite durable. I had a different one that I was using but I got an addition to my desk(L shaped now) so I needed to cover a larger area. I wanted it for a carpeted area and this one has no points on the bottom. I needed the large size so purchased it anyways. It is thinner than the previous one I had but because I am using it on carpet it does move around a bit which isn’t a hazard or a big deal but just an inconvenience to push it back in place every time I sit at my desk. It definitely would be better for hardwood etc as it is advertised but it does do the job. I’m sure if I could find another one as big as this with the carpet anchors I would return this but I will keep it and be happy. It hasn’t gotten scratched and it’s very easy to see the surface through it. Still a great purchase.

Shipped flat, made in UK
I ordered the 35x47 mat in Nov 2020. It shipped flat with no problems/damage, in a cardboard 'sleeve'. Started using it instantly. The mat has smooth side on the bottom and a textured side on the top. The sticker on the mat says it's made in the UK.I don't have calipers but using my ruler it appears to be 1-1.5 mm thick.I'm actually using it on commercial low pile carpet. It's easy enough to roll around (easier than the carpet!). When I first put it on the carpet, before I put my chair on the mat, it was easy to get the mat to slip around. But, once I put my chair it it it was semi-secure (e.g. I can still make it slip if I start twisting my foot on the mat). When I go to sit down normally, or anytime I'm actually sitting in my chair, the mat stays in place.
