What size gait belt should i buy

HOW TO MEASURE FOR AND APPLY THE GAIT TRANSFER BELT MEASURE AROUND THE WAIST SMALL 48” (121.9 cm) MEDIUM 54” (137.1 cm) LARGE 60” (152.4 cm) X-LARGE 72” (182.88 cm) 2X-LARGE 100” (254 cm) MEASURING INSTRUCTIONS A. Measure around the waist

Would this work for a paralyzed patient? I am currently lifting her from the wheelchair to the toilet but it is really straining my back.

No. You should use a Hoyer-Lift with someone who is paralyzed, for your safety and theirs. I would never use a gait belt for this use unless you’re extremely strong and can get behind the person for lifting. This isn’t easy when getting the person out of a chair or off of the toilet, you have to stand on the side and can only use one hand for lifting in these instances. There may be other methods that I’m not familiar with. Worth looking into or asking the patients physician.

How many inches extra should the belt be in addition to waist size?

It’s really a matter of taste since the belt has a device that bites into the material. Once you fasten it, it’s not coming loose until you want it to. But as a general guide line, I would suggest three inches past the connection point.

Does this belt have the metal teeth?

Yes, it has metal teeth. It is a nice heavy belt but the buckle is almost too narrow for the strap and must be worked in.
