One of my favorite books
I used to read this to my students, now that I am a mom I am so excited to read it to my daughter. This book is so silly, so fun, so well thought out.

Elephant and Piggie books are our favorites! They help young readers develop.
Piggie and Gerald books truly helped my child grasp reading. We were struggling in PreK and Kindergarten and a friend let us borrow several of these books by Mo Willems. In no time she was improving, laughing, and feeling much more confident. We ordered several more. By first grade she was in the top of her class for reading, her scores and confidence improved drastically, and she came in 3rd for her grade in their annual reading competition. I know that much of it was just natural development, but I honestly do also credit these books because they keep pages short, introduce big words slowly, and are repetitive in a fun way. They also touch on emotions in an intelligent way that creates critical thinking about situations these kids come across (like patience, pretending, others' perspectives, unique differences, etc.). I give these books as gifts now and can't say enough good things!

Mo Willems bats it out of the park yet again
I'm a terrible mother. Despite countless books filling my house, I've only recently discovered Elephant and Piggie, so I'll be adding that to the list of things I blew. I love each one I've scrounged from the library so far, but I'm so thrilled that I went ahead and bought this one before even reading it. The one problem? I can't get through it with the little ones without completely cracking up. It's that good. Mo Willems is a once-in-a-generation genius at conveying (hilarious) emotion dead-on with shockingly simple drawings. Each page has that kind of subtle joke that keeps Mom and Dad entertained easily as much as the kids. The best one? Elephant's existential angst at realizing the book does indeed have an end; his anguished cry, "I have MORE to GIVE!" is generally where I lose it and require a moment in in order to carry on. Let's not ruin the fun by discussing how awesome it is to allow the children to consider the technicalities of how books work (pulling up the corner to see which page number is the last? awesome) or experience the flipping of perspective and awareness. Go ahead and order this. It's one of the books that would come with us to a desert island. Happy reading!

Great book in a great series
I have a six-year-old boy who is very picky about his books, but he LOVES the Elephant and Piggie series for reading aloud. This is a particularly clever book within a great series. Elephant and Piggie discover they are in a book, the book is being read by a reader, and they can get the reader to say whatever they want him/her to. Finally, they realize that the book will END - what will they do?! The ending of the book is particularly cute, as they ask the reader to please read the book again so their fun can continue. This is an absolutely perfect book for an emerging reader, and definitely a favorite of ours within an already beloved series.

Awesome!
We love Elephant and Piggie around here. This book exceeded my expectations. It is funny for kids because of the hysteria that ensues after the characters realize that they control us and what we say. Their interaction with the readers is very playful and delightful. On a deeper note, it toys with a theme of mortality and existence. There is an dark urgency toward the end of the book as they realize that the story is almost finished and anxiety about what will happen next. Additionally, while they realized that they can control us by making us say funny words, readers realize that they can also control them (and their very existence!) by whether they decide to read the book again. Deep stuff for philosophy nerds, but a fun read for the kiddies. Can't lose with this book!

Divertentissimo!
