2013 two CD set containing four albums from the Bread winner. A founder member of Bread, David Gates was responsible writing and singing all of their hits. When Bread broke up in 1973 after five hugely successful albums, Gates immediately embarked on a solo career, although he was accompanied by former band-mates Mike Botts and Larry Knechtel, as well as the cream of LA's session musicians. This slip cased package contains the four solo albums that Gates recorded during the 70s, along with all the lyrics and annotation by Alan Robinson. First includes the sumptuous 'Suite: Clouds, Rain', while the title track of 'Never Let Her Go' was a hit. After Bread reunited for a final album in 1976, Gates resumed his solo career with the hit 'Goodbye Girl' from Neil Simon's film of the same name and fourth album Falling in Love Again in 1980. Edsel. Review: If you like the soft voice of Gates, this is well worth the modest price. - This is the union of 4 solo albums. It is complete and it makes memories flood back into my mind from years ago. It's a bargain and a delight. Review: Good purchase. - Plays well.

David Gates "Falling In Love Again"
I am really enjoying this recording very much. I have longed to have all his Warner Bros records together, and here they all our. Really a must have for any David Gates, and Bread fan. The packaging is 5 star. sound is very good(not digitally remastered)4 star I suppose my favorite album is "First" it is really well done, and the material, and recording process just really comes together in a high level of excellence. "Never Let Her Go" 1975 I like very much- The title track was the hit here, and is a strong song-the album certainly has that Gates feel. Maybe the record comp did not promote the recording the way it should ( who knows-it was a long time ago now). "Goodbye Girl" really have played this song for many years now-one of his best solo songs. I recall playing this record all the time as a teenager. The second hit song "Took The Last Train" I always liked the words and music very much. sweet memories "Falling In Love Again" is where some may not agree with me. I really like all but a few of the tracks. I like that here David does change a bit and the results are excellent. "Chingo" may not be a great song, but i really like listening to the song every time. Of course "Where Does The Loving Go" is a great ballad, maybe I should have taken more notice all of those years ago-Still tying to determine that. All in all I am trilled to have this record in my collection.

More than just Bread
More known for being the lead voice of Bread, this four album collection are not just ersatz Bread albums, but highlight his flair for country music, that was only hinted at on the Bread albums. Even without his Bread band mates, Gates has released fine studio albums showcasing his versatility.

I am very happy with the purchase
I am very happy with the purchase. This is a great compilation of his first four albums without the repeating of the previously released cuts on the Goodbye Girl album. I previously owned these recording in vinyl and it is now wonderful to listen to the songs on two continuous cds.

The BEST of the 70's Soft Sound
Nothing else needs to be said. Whether as lead for Bread or solo, he had it going on!

fantastic value and brilliant collection
I must clear up the most common misconception again shown here about David Gates. He was NOT the lead singer for bread. He was joint lead singer with James Griffin. People only believe he is the lead singer, as all the hits were by him. With regards to this collection, looking online, these albums are hard to come by, and to be able to collect all four for less than a tenner, is an absolute bargain. Shame that 'take me now' wasn't included, as this is generally unavailable on CD, and is a lovely album. The album 'first' is definitely the strongest, with Gates's magnum opus 'suite: clouds/rain' one of the best songs of his career by a country mile. A beautiful piano motif with some nice moog synthesiser and gorgeous singing. The whole album though, is fantastic with the gorgeous ballads aplenty, and a couple of more upbeat tracks. Never let her go is Gates's second album, and clearly not as strong. It has much shorter, less developed songs, and less ballads than is usual for a Gates release. Still, there are many joys here, namely 'part time love', 'someday', the title track and the sumptuous ballad 'playin on my guitar'. I think the whole album just needed one more track, a really well thought out orchestrated ballad to give the album a bit of weight. 'Goodbye girl' plays more like an EP with six new tracks and a few rehashed songs from the aforementioned two albums. Goodbye girl itself is an amazing song, along with its sister piece 'overnight sensation'. Both gorgeous piano based ballads. There is the pop masterpiece 'took the last train' and the country tinged 'drifter' which is also good. There are two more upbeat rock songs, both ok, but not outstanding. Falling in love again is a patchy album; I agree it is the weakest in this collection, but do not feel it is all that bad. The ballads are again where gates shines, and the title track as well as 'she was so young' are as good as anything he has done. 'Where does the lovin go' is also gorgeous and I particularly like the middle section in 'can I call you'. The weaker tracks are 'sweet desire' and 'starship ride' which to me, lack a bit of melody. Still, criticisms aside, this is a fantastic collection, and so nice to get at such an affordable price. Highly highly recommended.
