Heck of a coat!
Before purchasing this coat from Amazon, I was able to go to one of the many (I reside in Texas) western stores in town and try it on to get the sizing correct. Obviously I would suggest doing the same if you have the option. I am normally between a medium and a large, but I found that a small actually fit me best. This is certainly because the coat is sized to be layered, making it a little larger than normal. Since it doesn't get that cold around here, the size down is perfect if you aren't planning on wearing anything too thick underneath it. When the coat arrived (quickly as usual) it was saturated in oil (as designed) and smelling pretty foul (oil side effect) requiring me to hang it outside for a about a week. Finally the excess oil had dried away (taking the foul odor with it) leaving me with an awesome brown duster that is crazy waterproof. I removed the cape, to get away from the Van Helsing look, and what I am left with is a rather unique looking coat that I can't wait to wear once winter rolls around. I will say this is a pretty bold fashion item. If you are the type to feel embarrassed or anxious wearing something outside of the norm this probably isn't for you. If you like to stand out, have a thing for classic/badass styles, or simply don't care this is a very good option for a long coat. I personally cannot attest to its durability, but it seems to be solidly crafted. There are plenty of reviews here from people that use these for the kind of work they were intended for (ranching etc) and have raved about them. I expect it to last for quite some time.

LOVE. THIS. COAT.
Cant say enough good things about this coat. I received yesterday along with the Bootlegger hat. Received on time and I should mention, just in time out here in Worcester County, MA, where we had another strange storm or as we call it, a wintry mix, which means heavy sleet, snow and freezing rains, accompanied by unpredictable winds. One thing I noticed right away is the heft of the coat and while it did take a few minutes to figure out the buttons, it was as if I was wrapped in an oilskin cocoon. The rain just doesn't get in, regardless of how hard its blowing, regardless of how nasty the sleet is. buttoned up all the way and secure under the hat, I was pretty much impervious to the elements. I will likely get the liner in the near future, but overall, I was pretty warm under the skin. Price - about what I expected to pay - locally at a Cabellas, this ran for 160-180...paying instead 124, I was happy. Normally I never buy a lot of clothing online because I prefer to see it up close first, but the lack of availability here in the Northeast (its just not cowboy country) prompted me to go the Amazon route and I couldn't be happier. This is a very unique coat and like the hat, if you're in a region that isn't used to the whole country look, you will get some stares and confused faces, but once you get past that, you realize you're wearing something that is not only an awesome looking garment, but one that is weatherproof - I'd much rather wear this than a PCoat or rain coat - its just that cool. Adding to the cool factor is its ruggedness. While not something one would wear as formal wear, its definitely going to be at home in my truck as an all purpose garment. I work in construction and can easily see this working on job sites in the rain and snow - its just that good. I read a lot of complaints about the coat having a smell to it and there's a faint, almost leatherlike smell to it - personally, I dig it. The pockets are generous and many and again, once you get used to the buttons, its a pretty weatherproof affair that you'll see the value in immediately. I plan to probably buy another one as well as their shorter length coats.

Good raincoat. Very pleased. Keeping it.
I am 5'7', 160 pounds. I was reluctant to buy the coat because I struggled to decide if I should get a small or a medium. Also, some of the reviewers said the coat was oily and needed to hang outside for a while, and some said the snaps were dodgy. Discussed it with a family member and finally pulled the trigger. I bought a medium because I will probably wear something underneath it. Was nervous, because buying clothes without trying on is risky. Got the coat and was very pleased with my purchase. It is NOT oily, so that was good. The length is good for a 5'7' person (I contemplated the other coat that was 3" longer) so that is good. The snaps were intact and working properly, so that was good. And, most importantly, I like the fit. I will be able to layer in the rain, and use the coat in cooler weather. So I am very pleased with the purchase.

Fantastic coat, but a little big
The quality of the coat is absolutely stunning. Very good fibers, nice and thick, it has a great weight and feel to it. After trying it on, it felt very good and the feel of the material is definitely what you would expect from an "oilskin" jacket, such that even my fingers felt slightly tacky/greasy when handling the material for too long. This wasn't a problem when just putting on or taking off the jacket, but be very careful about extended contact between two materials, such the seat of your car. I am personally in-between sizes Small/Medium for most of my clothing, but generally I err on the side of Medium as a relaxed fit is more comfortable to me than a tight fit. Even according to the size guide, the Medium was the same size as my jeans, and any fitted shirts I've purchased which use inch-based sizing. However, the cut and style of this coat is very large and billowy anyway, so with the Medium I had at least 3 inches of excess fabric on each side of my hips, and the arm length was so long that it completely covered the palms/backs of my hands, and knuckles, even with my arms stretched out, making me feel like a little kid in his dad's clothes. I have to reiterate though, that I do love the coat, and will instead be buying the Small version of it as, according to their sizing chart, that trims about 4 inches off the waist, and an inch off the arm-length, which should be about perfect. I really did not want to do a return/exchange as this jacket was absolutely everything I expected in texture, weight, feel, and color. It even has extra straps on the bottom that you can snap around your pant legs, to keep the coat from flapping and billowing in a stiff breeze. I can't wait to receive my Small sized one, and try it out in a downpour. Absolutely will recommend it to others, it is worth every penny.

Great overcoat
This is a very nice overcoat. Oilskin material is 'wet' feeling on arrival, but dries out in a week or so. The cowl is snapped on and is removable. Two unlined outside front pockets with snap closure (with smallish, unlined hand warmer pockets behind them). The sizing is as expected for an overcoat. To give an example, I ordered a Large. I have a 49" chest measurement and I was able to wear this coat OVER a size Large armored motorcycle jacket (which is a pretty bulky item itself). There's a cinch cord in the waist, so you can still get a good outline. If you want to wear this with just a shirt, you'll probably want to order one or more sizes smaller, but as an overcoat there sizing is good. There's a very thin sewn-in cotton liner. This coat would be improved by having more substantial button in liner and lined pockets. Being fairly wind resistent, this coat has kept me reasonably warm in 32 degree weather with just a wool sweater underneath. Doesn't seem to stiffen up much in the cold either. Takes a certain swagger to pull off a garment like this, especially in black. The number of people who cross the street to avoid me has increased significantly--but that's not such a bad thing. I bought from horse.com via amazon. First they sent me a defective coat (broken snap). This took two weeks to arrive. Then they took another several weeks to send a replacement. All in all it took a month between the time I paid and the time I could wear the coat. I would personally not buy anything from horse.com again, but that's not the coat's fault.

VERY impressed!
Love it. I'm a difficult size to fit, and most "long coats" only barely touch my knees. My old coat (custom made) was worn out... I took a chance on this one. This one is a good fit, good length, and excellent construction. I'd recommend to anyone... I'm impressed. Just a note: If you've never had an oiled coat, there are some items of note: The treatment oil will soak through or get on your hands... it's normal. I'd recommend wearing old clothes under it, and go for a walk in a rainstorm to break it in... a little oil, or even water, may soak through. This is oiled CLOTH, remember... not plastic. Water will get through with prolonged exposure (you want a 100% water -repelling-for hours coat, go buy a plastic rainsuit & sweat in it until you're soaked anyway). You will occasionally need to treat it to keep it's water-repellency at peak. You will also need to hang it... again... it's oil-soaked cloth, and could leach oil to porous surfaces like wood, stone, leather, etc... Know what you're getting into to avoid surprises or disappointment. Long as you wear it and treat it properly, this one won't disappoint. Oh, and remember to complete the ensemble with a proper leather or oiled canvas hat with a wide enough brim to keep the rain off your neck and out of your collar... this ain't the kind of gear you wear with a ball cap. Enjoy!

Well worth the price, and great quality!
I purchased this for my daughter in 2012, it was $85. She wanted a "matrix" style jacket, and I thought this was similar and would be warm. I had my fingers crossed she would like the coat. It was a huge hit! In the last 11 years she has grown a bit and we needed a larger size. The price has gone up to $200, but for the quality of the coat, it was certainly worth the additional cost. The older jacket doesn't have any signs of wear at all. The duster keeps her warm and dry (most important) and she loves the style, still. I would highly recommend this item.
