YMI Pasadena Wooden Inlaid Backgammon Set, 15 in

Good quality set at a fair price.

I received this backgammon board today, it arrived within a week after I placed my order. Nice. After unwrapping it, the overall appearance is beautiful. I put on my reading glasses and gave it a scrutinized view. Sure the notched slots for the hinges are slightly bigger than the hinge itself but they were seated straight and screws were flush. I’ve read a lot about this board warping. I’ve only had it a day so that is to be seen. More to come on that. The magnets work fine, although I found if the cups aren’t in the back corners but in the middle of the board, the lid will not close correctly because the cups are slightly larger. Strange but that’s the way it is. The veneers are thin but beautifully inlaid with no seams I could feel. I gave the 3 stars for thickness because the lid and bottom are about 3/16” the sides and bar are substantial. When the board is open it’s pretty impressive. The almost black wood inlays go great with the blonde pips. The mahogany background is pleasing rot the eye. Some people complained about the color of the darker checker pieces. I like the color, a dark salmon, the other pieces are a light cream. They’re a little light but they slide nicely on the board surface. I’m going to make my own out of Koa and Mango wood. The dice are ok, why one set is all red with white dots and the other set is white with red and black dots is beyond me. Personally I don’t like the rounded corners and the dice feel too light, so I’ll find some I prefer but if you use the cups, I guess it doesn’t matter. Speaking of the cups, nice one piece wood with felt on the inside bottom. One silly thing I do like is, that this is a dedicated backgammon board and there’s no checker board on the top and bottom. Purist😂 I can’t wait to play some games on this board to see how it holds up. I’ll let you know.

This backgammon set is considerably better than your cheapo, children's, cardboard Economy Backgammon type set, but the dice are not fair. My friend and I were looking for a good, inexpensive backgammon set to play on, but didn't want those cheap kids games. This was very modestly priced and is fantastic quality for the price. Some others have said it seems a little cheap, but it's not (bear in mind that you aren't paying for a leather bound, marble chip set with dice made of gold and silver). The board and chips are made of wood and has a nice design. The chips are light; they slide easily into place and can be picked up in groups easily. The surface is rather slick, so dice with pointy will sometimes slide instead of rolling over. The one thing I don't like is the dice that came with it. The paint started to smear immediately and they are funny looking - especially the 1 pip side. Plus, the dice are different sizes and the two players' colors are very close (there's a slightly off-white pair and a slightly more off-white pair). After playing for a while, I started to suspect they were not fair. My friend and I - we are graduate math students - ran a chi-square test with 150 rolls on each die and we determined with a 95% confidence level - that means we are really, really confident - that the dice are not fair. So we are using some dice from a cheapo economy board game. Bottom line is that you cannot get a better backgammon set for a price like this, but you should obtain alternate dice.

Great product - strong, sturdy and right size. Got it for my 95 years old chap - he loves the dice and the touch and feel of the board.

Most of the games I saw were around 70 dollars but this one is about 30. This game is wooden, it has hand carved cups and nice large pieces. The dice are nice. The only issues I have are that the board is very light, which could be good or bad depends, I like a heavy one but this is still well made. The only other issue is that the colors are not very easily distinguished. Yet for the price I paid and the way it is made it is all in all a very good game. I would recommend rather than blowing 70 dollars or more on a game that will be about the same but just extremely overpriced. I really like it and we have played it and seem to have no problems so far. I would tell others to buy it!

This 15" backgammon board is the perfect size. The selection of wood in the board is beautiful. The orange and ivory pieces are the perfect accent colors. I am enjoying playing on it.

Let me start by saying that overall I've been a happy customer with my past YMI purchases. They offer generally hard to find items in the USA (like go stones) at good prices. However I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with the backgammon set I received. Its very possible that its just a QC issue with mine, but here is the rundown: Pros: - Nice material overall, decent weight but not too bulky. - Patterns on the wood are pleasing and not much in the way of obvious knots, etc. - The deep contrast on the pip marks is nice. I'm not sure what the actual wood type is but its a very nice contrast in both color and grain and makes for a beautiful playing surface. Cons: - The actual playing area of the board is about 11.5-12 inches deep, not 13. I'm not sure if the standard way to measure backgammon boards counts the border thickness, but based on how this one is measured I wish they had a "piano lacquer" set at 15 inches. - The pieces are very plain, and two white pieces had some deep dents on one side. - Would have been nice if the dice cups were a bit deeper. They look nice but its too easy to shake die out of them by accident. - The dice are HORRIBLE (cheap, light, uneven, different sizes). DO NOT PLAY WITH THEM. As another reviewer said, there is no way these are rolling fair. Pick up some small dice separately or grab some extras from another game in your collection. - Board is glued together which is normally fine, but there are places in the seams where the glue is obviously visible because they used too much. I may end up taking an exact-o knife to it. Overall its an okay set but the accessories are lacking in comparison to the overall beauty of the wood and finish. The glue being visible along seams is unfortunate and I would have expected better. If you replace the dice and if the glue wasn't visible I'd be very happy with this purchase because there is nothing on its own that is majorly wrong with this set, but the little things all add up. For a little more money I think you can probably get much better.

Very nice board. The wood is an excellent quality and the colors match well. Slight misalignment on the sides that is barely noticeable. For this price, I would say this is a very good deal and would buy again.

However, once I contacted Yellow Mountain Imports via their website; I received a response quite quickly. The representative was understanding of the issue and reached out in less than 12 hours and offered a replacement unit to be sent to me promptly. A quick double check of shipping address and I have another set at my doorsteps, which is for all intent and purposes in perfect condition. No tiny scratches, no misalignment, and the magnets actually hold both sides together once the set it closed. All in all, it was a pleasant interaction and the end result is a nice backgammon set for a great value. You can definitely shop with confidence that the sets are well-made and if there is an issue, customer service department will be there to aid you and resolve the issue efficiently and effectively. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Original Review: [I bought this set as a gift and when it arrived I thought to double check it before gifting it. The packaging is quite good and design is also nice. There was a tiny scratch on the outside of the board in the darker center inlaid portion. However, that can be easily addressed with a bit of polish. However, as shown in the photo, the board doesn't shut tight and it sits crookedly, which is due to the cutout for the hinges. If it was for myself, I would have begrudgingly fix the issue; alas, as it's a gift I'm not willing to chance scratching hinges. Thus, I have contacted the company to see what they are willing to do on the matter. Depending on their response, I will update my rating for better or worse. One thing to consider was the fact that this board is available through their website for US customers for less than half of what's advertised here on Amazon. Unfortunately, they don't ship to Canada.]
