Very disappointing. See inside.

I let my original review stand below, but, things have taken a sinister turn. I was transferring a large number of large files between 2 external USB hard drives when weirdness ensued. Some files went missing, as in they are no longer on either drive. Some files were transferred but were locked in the receiving hard drive. These files are now stuck and I am unable to move them or delete them or rename them. When I try to delete the file it puts a COPY in the recycle bin which also cannot be deleted. if I restore the file it creates ANOTHER copy in the recycle bin which also cannot be deleted. Some of the file names were changed after moving the files and some letters in the file name were replaced with Chinese characters. These are the files that cannot be moved. Other files moved fine and appear normal. Other files would not move and I got an error bubble saying Input/Output error and those files were locked on the original drive and cannot be moved or renamed or deleted. Even after restarting the computer the files remained locked on the drives. I was NOT connected to the internet and downloaded NOTHING. I did not run the install disc as it was supposedly for Windows and I'm running Linux. The only thing different was the installation of the expresscard chipset. I talked to an IT guy who said it is likely counterfeit Chinese hardware that is preloaded with malware.Run away from this chipset if you value your computer and your privacy. Who knows what it installed on my computer.Original review:I installed this unit on an older Asus computer. Transfer speeds between external hard drives on original USB 2 was a terrible 20 MB/S at most, usually around 18 MB/S. With the USB 3.0 card installed and the drives hooked up to both USB 3.0 ports the transfer speed was an abysmal 4 MB/S. Added the external power cord and plugged it into original USB 2.0 port speed went UP to 28-30 MB/S. Plugged the power cord into a 1.2 amp USB wall outlet and the speed actually went DOWN to 25 MB/S.So it's faster than the original transfer rate of the USB 2.0 ports I have, but nothing stellar. I was hoping for something more, but the limitations might be from my computer and not the card. Some complaints:The card gets hot. Happens to be right in the spot where I rest my hand to type on this computer. This kind of sucks in Florida. Might be a big bonus in Alaska. The transfer hangs at times, when it does this any speed benefit is nullified.Have to use the external power cord or it's worthless. More junk to haul around, when the cord goes tits up good luck finding a replacement. Whenever I want to use it I have to plug in the stupid cord which hangs out like a sore dick.Sometimes I have to plug the drives in a couple of times for the computer to recognize that they are there. The card slides in the port kind of tight, hard to tell when it's seated. In my computer it over inserts enough that you can't plug the usb cables in and the "push in to remove" feature of the slot does not work because the card is so tight. So you have to dick with it to get it inserted so it will work, and you have to dick with it to get it back out. Not a huge problem as I didn't intend to ever remove it.The good things:Well, it IS faster than the ports I have. By like 70% which in actuality is a huge amount if you think about it. As long as it doesn't hang those huge 10 GB+ files won't keep you waiting nearly as long.Running Ubuntu (Linux) all I had to do was plug the card in. Drivers were already in my computer apparently. Noticed other people bitching about finding correct drivers. All in all I have to say I AM overall disappointed with the performance in my laptop, but it was maybe worth the $12 or whatever just to have an extra USB port as I'm always seeming to be one short. Would have been a lot happier if I got two extra ports instead of just the one (due to having to use a USB port to power it up).I would say if you can get this cheap enough it's worth a try as even if it doesn't perform like you want it to you could possibly get 1 or 2 more ports on your computer.

Product Review by Acigan International

Product arrived intact and undamaged. Product was tested on a ten year old laptop to see if technology that predates a laptop's hardware would function, along with an Operating System that did not exist when the laptop was designed. Test machine had been previously upgraded to Win10 from Vista and its hardware supports the 54mm Express Card format in OEM hardware. The product was inserted and Win10 recognized the device as a USB 3.0 multiport. Windows 10 recognizes the card as a generic USB 3.0 Hub and loads the MS generic drivers. The card functions as a hub under the MS generic drivers. The card was ejected and removed, the MS generic drivers were uninstalled. The Product driver mini CD was loaded and the driver setup program loaded and executed. The test machine was rebooted manually to ensure driver loading and services were properly recognized although this is not a necessary step under Win10 and is a step taken during product testing by the Tester. The Product card was then reinserted into the 54mm Express Card slot and the hub was recognizes and functional under Win10 as expected. A high speed USB 3.0 external Hard Disk was attached to the card hub and data transfer rates were tested and analyzed. A test data was moving from the HD thru the card at expected high speed USB 3.0 rates.Review of the Windows Drivers show a difference of Hubs and Devices between the generic MS driver and the supplied CD driver, with the supplied driver properly segmenting the HUB hardware from the Ports hardware. The Product performs flawlessly and without technical knowhow. It will function as a card only plug and play using the MS generic drivers, but testing shows that the supplied driver on mini CD that is supplied, properly interfaces both the Hub hardware on the card and the Ports hardware on the card and registers the Supplier OEM properly. It is therefore recommended that the CD drivers be installed so that a machine can properly understand the hardware being attached. The use of OEM drivers ensures that all functions are properly activated and addresses giving the card its full capabilities to a User. This may not be the case when MS generic drives are used that only ensure compatibility as a Hub to work with Win10.Test results of the Product show that this Product can be used to upgrade a machine from a time when high speed USB 3.0 was not even on the horizons of development or that modern operating systems were not even written. The Product can be used to revive older laptops to use current high speed data transfers outlined in the USB 3.0 specifications when such specs were not even written. This is a 5-Star and a very good Product.

Works

I have an old Toshiba laptop. It didn't have USB3, but it did have the express card slot. I have used it, and it seems to work fine. Since it is an older Laptop, not sure if I get the full USB3 speed, but it works for me. It comes with a USB cable to plug it in for power. I use one of my old cell phone AC to USB chargers. It works.
