An excellent book when combined with actual hands-on training with an instructor.
As someone well into their senior years and having been seriously involved in numerous martial arts and law enforcement training programs, (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, American Combatives, Krav Maga, MDTS, PR-24 and Straight baton programs and many other systems) for more than 7 decades I am always seeking to learn and improve my overall knowledge on the above subjects. This is why when I saw this fantastic 192-page soft cover book (When the fight goes to the ground: Jiu-Jitsu strategies and tactics for self-defense, by Lori O’Donnell, forward by Steve Hiscoe and Jenifer Weintz) on Amazon I decided to purchase it. As always, the delivery service was quick and efficient.I loved this book as soon as I began to read it because the writer (Lori O’Connell) immediately gives credit to her original Can-Ryu Jujitsu instructor Georges Sylvain in the acknowledgements. As someone who had the pleasure of knowing, training and teaching with Georges Sylvain at the International PR-24 Baton instructor seminars in Ohio many years ago, I grew to respect and really liked Professor Georges Sylvain. We have not kept up over the years and I hope he is still healthy and well I knew he was involved in numerous combat systems but did not know until I read this book that he was also the founder of Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu.This book is filled with practical advice and color photographs showing the various ground fighting techniques and practical self-defense methods. The eighteen chapters cover an enormous amount of material which also includes a DVD. I was familiar with the majority of material in this book and I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about practical and effective ground self-defense tactics; however, as I always stress, even in my own books, one must actually train with an instructor to truly master the finer details of any type of combat self-defense system. This excellent book can reinforce what an instructor has taught you in a hands-on training session. A fantastic book.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Advanced PR-24 Baton Techniques and Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton).

excellent tuition and pictures
I have been practicing martial arts for 32 years and have built up quite a library of martial related books over the years. This is welcome edition! I have experienced BJJ over the years through training, seminars and the odd book. This is the best one yet. A great comprehensive coverage, a lot of thought has gone into this book. I can't believe the price I paid and it also comes with a DVD of which I have not watched as of yet but if its anything like the book, I won't be disappointed.A great resource guide and insight to the world of BJJ as well as it being tailored for self-defence applications

Solid Foundation From Which to Begin
I am always skeptical about any work that talks about: "when the fight goes to ground." The reality of that very scenario is as harsh as the outcome far removed from the contrived octagon with its myriad of rules of safety. In LE incidents, it is usually how the multiple officers contain a single non-compliant suspect successfully, or how an LE is in a world of hurt and fighting for his or her very life against the worst case-scenario.In combat it means the target has been terminated or combatants are attempting to kill one another by any and all means available, where the most vicious soul will prevail. This book bridges a gap that needed filled, and O'Connell Sensei provided solid basics of the movements required, that are fundamental for survival, when one has been rendered to the ground, for whatever reason. Both the book and the DVD complement this intense learning experience.Bathed in common sense and practicality I have not witnessed in a while, in this arena, the reader/viewer will gain the insights into what will assist one in managing the self with top notch motor skills while on the ground, seeking to prevail in less than ideal circumstances. Some weaknesses do exist, in that getting back up on the feet was not overly stressed. Getting back up into a vertical posture, quickly and smoothly, is paramount to survival here. We are at our most vulnerable when on the ground without weapons. Yes, we must be able to manage our actions to protect ourselves when we are on the ground. But we must be able to get upright and mobile to prevail. While getting to base was shown, standing up from any grounded position was lacking. It is not as easy as people think--though simple, it can be hazardous, if the basics of this transition are not fully understood, and these fundamentals own nothing to do with what is found in athletic contests. It's aggressive and proactive even from our worst position. The other weakness was, while the book and video were both meticulous in its instructional presentations of these solid basics, there was no real example of the fast and brutal, real time action that happens in this environment. It was all very slowed down, and this impedes the realization of what is really needed down here. The abruptness changes things--mentally and physically.People needing to learn the applications also need to learn this abruptness and violence of how things unfold, otherwise they become much more subjected to personal panic of not knowing. The applications are solid--100%--some of the best teaching presentations out there--simple, direct and economical in the execution of said basics. If one masters these and then can apply them under the dire duress of the brutality that is ground combat, one will finally understand this area of operation. But that is the catch, the brutality of this arena must be understood if one desires to arrive on the other side of prevailing.Technically and for an instructional format with the book and DVD, this is a superbly accomplished item, very well done, indeed.A.
