Can it be used to coat ceramic fiber insulation in a foundry? If so, how thick and thin can the layers be applied?..

I used CleanBurn over a ceramic fiber blanket that I used to cover the sheet metal firebox and flue in my outdoor fireplace.  I covered the blanket with chicken wire and patted the mortar into it.  Then I coated with another thin coat of mortar.  It set up really hard in 24 hours.  Total thickness 3/4" to 1”.  I finally coated the whole box with coloring and some regular mortar.  It looks like stucco now... Pretty nice.  Inside a foundry you'll need the chicken wire to hold the blanket up and give the Cleanburn something to stick to. -  Mikee

What are the drying procedures for this product? Can it be used in a forge?

Hello,
For drying time, the cement will set between 9 & 10 hours. Heat can be applied 24 hours after the mix has been set. This product can also be used in forges.

Is this suitable and safe for the cooking surface of an outdoor pizza oven?

I used this to repair a chiminea. I would not use it as an actual cooking surface without researching all the materials in it. You could cover the surface with a good quality clay. That would work. Nice product. Easy to work with.

Question 4

How thick does the cement have to be for the floor of a fire box in a coal fired furnace? The fire box is 24" in diameter. How many pails will I need?

Accepted Answer

Depends on a couple things like what type of base your pouring it on and if it has insulation or not; example; if the base is a sturdy steel plate, then that will help hold the form better and the less refractory needed.. But if the base is unstable or flexes, then you will need a thicker layer of refractory.. Also the insulation factor is relatively low with this refractory cement, so the thicker the layer the better the insulation.. but one pail should give you a decent layer on a 24” diameter fire box.. and I’d say a 1”+ layer should be okay.
