Spectacular Speakers
I had the Polk XT70's.. which were good, and for the average person, they suffice. But I wanted something that was spectacular, speakers that I could enjoy, and re-listen to every song to appreciate the detail. I can report these speakers are spectacular. When they come out of the box, they are a little muffled. After use (at higher volumes - the book recommends 90 DB) they break in and sound great. The bass is so powerful, I'm returning my subwoofer, I just don't need it!Update March 2024Still in love with these. I am adding a subwoofer to complete my theater room. The sub will help with some of the lower frequencies and the "punch" during action movies... not desperately needed but one of those things that has to be done in the chase of home theater perfection :-) Amp settings are going to require some research to arrive at the best settings, last time I did not have the correct settings. Side note: Martin Logan MC-6 in-ceiling speakers are equally spectacular for ATMOS or general music around the house.. even the IC6 (cheapest entry-level like $100/each) ceiling speakers are really good. HiFi Heaven recommended these and I'm glad he did.Update April 2022Still in love with these speakers. Everyone who comes over for a movie is impressed. I’m convinced the best speakers for the money. They do music very well (don’t Bluetooth to your receiver it will sound terrible, be sure to use a receiver that can stream the music directly), crisp and clear and good bass. Movies are spectacular also. I have friends with setups that cost 20x what my setup costs and there is minimal differences. Get a good receiver and calibrate for your room it increases bass a lot.. and disable a lot of the receiver auto sound settings. I had to increase center speaker volume a bit for movies. I had a subwoofer, I calibrated it and then watched action sequences at a higher volume than I would ever… and the sub did not even turn on once. Lol. So I returned it. I notice the distance to the speakers make a big difference, I moved my sofa forward a bit and much better sound stage. I believe about 9-12 feet is ideal.PS I like them so much, I bought the smaller set for my office.Update October 2022 (1 year of use)Updating this review because I am sitting here listening to Heart of Gold by Neil Young and thinking how these speakers might be my favorite item I’ve ever purchased. Movies sound incredible, music sounds incredible.. zero complaints. I have these with a 4k laser projector.. my all in cost for my movie room is 10K and this is my favorite room and used 2-4 times a week. You must pair with a good receiver and calibrate them correctly.. this makes a 2-3x improvement in sound. I bought a Denon receiver from Costco and calibrated it.

Amazing sound!
I bought these speakers because I wanted good sound with good base all together. These speakers exceeded my expectations. If you're a type of person that listens to music from a distance than these are not for you, these are perfect when you're facing them.I'm running these on Sony $250 amp.

Finally!
Amazing speakers for a great price. No soundbar can replace the quality of these speakers. Pair it with a quality amp and you will be amazed. The reviews are true regarding a subwoofer. You don’t require one with these speakers.

Excellent Sound
First, I bought these in mint used condition. I got really lucky with the price, so that will bias my review. Also, I bought these primarily for music listening. Now that that's out of the way...I went from Klipsch R-150M and a subwoofer to these. First thing, got rid of the subwoofer, didn't need it. This has resonant frequencies own to 20hz. Immediately, from bookshelves to these, you notice a huge difference just in the cohesion between bass and treble.*Correction* (6mo later): Yes, these are a bit lacking below 40hz. Also, there is a dip in response in the 120hz range or so… somewhere in the mid upper bass. I ended up bringing the subwoofer back into the mix.Second thing I will note is the ease of listening/airiness. Yes, that is a reason I purchased these. They sound natural.Third thing: Your room is probably going to be the limiting factor here, not the speakers. For most people, these speakers are not going to be the "bottleneck" in your quest to unlocking great sound,A final note: if you are running these from an AVR, be aware of your sound processing settings. If your room is a bad situation (For example, I have a bad room), take advantage of your Audyssey MultiEQ XT or other system. If you are using the Audyssey, get the app for $20 and remove the mid-range dip. Your "reference" setting will also turn down the bass. You can correct that in the app to have a rich bass below 60hz (Just a bit, mybe 4-5dB higher than the treble), which fits this speaker well. Audiosciencereview has a review on how to use the Audyssey.BASS: Obviously bass is usually the biggest problem for people. The rear ports on this put out some strong low frequencies. I started off by plugging the port with a soft foam I cut out of something else. It was a bit much, so I instead just put a "partial" plug and I'd say it's perfect now. Use this in conjunction with or AFTER you've done your EQ to tame below 40hz. The official range is 40hz, so it's going to be hard to correct below 40 using eq, hence the ports. Also, EQ from a "sound purity" perspective isn't ideal if you can help it.I'd say you probably want AT LEAST 8 feet between the speakers and your listening position, and AT LEAST 16 inches from the back of the speaker to the wall, and AT LEAST 6 feet between the tweeters.
