Kafka revisited
I chose the rating because this COLLECTED STORIES is one I have never owned before. So, now I can lose myself in revisiting all that delicious creativity. I lost a treasured edition with fewer stories years ago. I like Kafka's observations regarding his own writing and how he thinks about it. The ELEVEN SONS is a good example . The book exceeded my expectation and every day as I sit down to read, I am more delighted with it. Fran Jansen

Franz Kafka is one of the world's greatest authors and his stories will make you think!
Dr. Franz Kafka was born in Prague in 1883. He died in 1924 from T.B. a disease which has killed other authors young such as D.H. Lawrence and George Orwell. Kafka was Jewish and wrote in the German language. He never married but had several affairs. He worked for an insurance firm and had a law degree. Kafka is a brilliant writer producing three novels . His novels The Trial and The Castle emphasis the craziness of modern life. in this excellent collection of his best short stories the brilliance of Kafka and his insight into human life is on full display. Outstanding in these tales are:The Metamorphosis of 1915. Gregor Sama a traveling salesman wakes one morning to find he has been turned into a huge insect. How his family reacts and his sorry fate is explained in great detail and compassion by Kafka. One of my favorite all time short stories. The Judgement of 1913 in which the sad final hours of a suicide victim are told. The story of father-son conflict hints at the author's own troubles with his parent. In the Penal Colony (1919) is as eerie as Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum. Once read this story will not be forgotten. In addition to longer stories the book features several short aphorisms and parables. Kafka is one of the seminal authors of the modern age of angst and despair. He has been called the Dante of the 20 th century. Everyman editions are always a delight to read and this wonderful book belongs on your bookshelf!

All one needs of Kafka
I thought I did not much like Kafka, after reading his longer novel-length works. His name is bandied about and he is thought to embody what is, by now, a common theme of alienation under modernity. But he wrote many more short works than I thought, and this edition--beautifully bound and with a fine introduction as every Everyman book is--is the best collection of his I've found. His thematic concerns shine through the more clearly when works he didn't think would be published, are; and even a critic can come to value Kafka highly. Rankable with Borges as a short-story writer, or a snap-shottist: one of his paragraph-length pieces is told from the viewpoint of a hunted animal, the last image of which has the hunter stroking the hind-legs, as a hunter might really do. A fantastic imagination Kafka had, and a fantastic edition of it here. Also features The Metamorphosis, the most tolerable of his longer works.

One of the finest collections of short stories & parables in world literature!
One of the finest collections of short stories & parables, many with paradoxical, existential themes, in world literature. Many of these Kafka stories are so good, notwithstanding occasional complexity, that they may be reread many times over. Despite some dark, disturbing settings, many are also laced with absurdist humour. Yet others move one deeply. This edition is fairly complete, comprising 87 Kafka stories. Translations are by Kafka's original English translators, Willa & Edwin Muir. Though their rendering is highly renowned, newer critically acclaimed English translations also exist in other editions. How fitting then that Everyman's Library produces such splendid hardcover books, with quality Smyth-sewn binding & on acid-free paper that will endure for generations. No hesitations in giving this volume 5 stars. I'd also recommend Kafka's excellent novels, "The Trial" & "The Castle" by the same publisher.PS: Now if only Everyman's Library would also publish Kafka's 3rd novel, "America", Kafka's outstanding, soul-searching "Diaries" & his volumes of insightful letters, my wishes of one day owning all the work of this extraordinary writer in uniform quality hardcover would be fulfilled.
