Marguerite Henry’s beloved story of a wild horse’s gentle colt—winner of a Newbery Honor! On the island of Chincoteague, off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland, lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely-seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her—that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can’t live without her. The frenzied roundup that follows on the next Pony Penning Day does indeed bring Phantom into their lives, in a way they never would have suspected. Phantom would forever be a creature of the wild. But her gentle, loyal colt Misty is another story altogether... Review: One of the all-time classics - How many of us horse-crazy people grew up with Marguerite Henry's stories? I think Misty is the best of them all, especially because of its message to let the wild stay wild. The only criticism I have is of the often condescending treatment of Maureen, which I find annoying. Even the illustrations show her as second-class citizen. Review: Great Quality Keepsake Book - Got this book for my granddaughter as it was a favorite of mine! The illustrations and story are beautiful. Well made, hard cover book.

Why did I wait so long to read this book?
I can't believe I put off reading this book for 27 years. Early in my teaching career, I had a student who told me I should read this book. Here we are, and as of today I have finally done it. What a touching story about hard-working children who do not have the typical home life (quite rare for 1947), yet beat the odds to achieve the goals they set out to achieve. A sweet story I would recommend to anyone who is or is not a horse lover, especially since you can go there today and see these things for yourself. I will make it to Chincoteague Island one day.

A Heartwarming Change of Pace
After reading many books for adults, I needed a change of pace—a story that was more happy than sad, free of tension and conflict. I picked up MISTY OF CHINCOTEAGUE and immediately realized that I had found what I was searching for. All of the characters—especially Paul and Maureen, the boy and girl who fall in love with Misty—are good-hearted, caring people, very much like my neighbors in Salisbury, Maryland, a town about 40 miles north of Chincoteague. My family has visited Chincoteague many times. We love it, and the book brings back many fond memories of the town and its people. Even if you never visit the Eastern Shore of Virginia in person, reading this book will make you feel at home with the people, ponies, and other animals of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands.

Classic kid's horse story.
This is a really sweet, classic story about a brother and sister around 11 or 12 who spend the summer with their grandparents on the Chincoteage island and fall in love with a horse and work to make her their own. The story is based on an actual event that takes place every year the last month of July on the Chincoteague Island, Virginia. This is actually the book that made the Pony Swim famous and 2023 will be the 97th year that it has taken place. The book was written so long ago so feels dated but because it’s about a real thing that still happens, it’s worth the read, especially for any child that loves horses. There is a movie of the same name which I also liked. I like wholesome.

Great children’s story with some American history
The story is captivating and has historical flashbacks. Somewhat ahead of its time in children’s storytelling. Sent it to one of my friends to read to her grandchildren.

A brilliant book!
This book is excellent but I think it is very sad when the Phantom leaves Misty for the Pied Piper.
