Thorough and thought out
I love this book it shows step by step how to carve eyes, lips etc. very helpfulbefore you try though be sure to practice with your tools and make sure they are sharp. I have some cheaper tools as we could not afford the better ones yet and they are so hard to work with that I ended up following their techniques but did it all with a knife. Meaning its better to get good tools but either way learn to sharpen them.

Excellent source for learning to carve facial features.
I received this book today and took a good long look at it. I believe it to be a very useful, helpful book. Not only does Mr. Enlow cover the basic elements of face carving, he also includes several fully carved, detailed faces that I found very helpful and will adapt to some of my own carvings. I gave this book 4 stars because I felt the photos could have been better and maybe showed the particular point in the carving from different views. Other than that, I highly recommend this book for beginning and intermediate carvers. I disagree with the two people who gave it only two stars. One person said you can't learn to carve from a book and should find other carvers to help you learn. While I agree you can't just read a book a learn to carve and must take knife and wood in hand and go at it yourself and certainly, if you can be around other carvers you will definitely learn more and progress at a faster rate, using a book as a starting point can be very effective. I know there are different learning styles among different people and some do not learn well from books, not because of lack of intelligence or literateness, but just because they have a different learning style. The other person just said don't buy it without any reason given. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I've enjoyed Mr. Enlow's carvings and books for a long time. Caricature carving is my primary focus. If the nose is a little crooked you can always say, "Well, sure it's crooked. It's a caricature!" LOL

Face Carving Bible
Stop the presses! This is the only book on carving faces you'll ever need! The directions are superlative, the pictures are fabulous and to me, it's THE BEST book out there for the novice carver to learn how to carve the face----which can be SO frustrating. The fact that the pictures are so up-close and CLEAR, makes it easy to produce a face. My previous efforts either looked like a blob or just hacked wood. Even his placement of his knife helps so much. Thank you Harold Enlow for helping me on my quest to open the gates to successful face creation!

Bought as a gift for my Brother
This book is fantastic. I've only ever made a spoon, but my brother is an impressive whittler. He was very happy to receive this book for his birthday!

Getting Down to Details
Harold Enlow's earlier book "How to Carve Faces in Driftwood" got me started in woodcarving over 20 years ago, and "Carving Faces Workbook" is a valuable addition in that it gets down to the details of facial features and expressions. This book will help the carver create just the face and expression he or she wants, to carve more deliberately. I have to admit that many of my carvings took on a life of their own, and while they get lots of compliments, I can't say I planned the expressions and features the way they emerged. Enlow helps me carve more intentionally.

Better info. available in videos on the internet.
Not as step by step as I had hoped. The internet has much better video options to learn these techniques and I recommend that before purchasing this 'book.' Save your money for a good carving knife and watch multiple videos instead of buying this book like I did. It's already in the Goodwill bin...
