How do you hear symbols?
Those of us who were lucky enough to recognize a teacher of the sacred wisdom who could pass on that wisdom to us orally, understand that the sound vibration of words is more important than the literal translation of those words when it comes to metaphysical teaching. If that statement doesn’t make sense to you, you might want to read this book anyway. Metaphysical teaching comes in layers. If one layer doesn’t make sense to you, your subconscious might be able to use that information to help draw a more compatible explanation to you. (Seriously, it works.)It was an Instagram post that likened emojis to hierogylphics that reminded about this book. It had been sitting in a pile on a shelf for weeks. Suddenly I realized that I needed to review it right away. What I discovered as I read it was that all the questions I had had about Jewish Kabbalistic teaching and its infiltration into Western Mystery traditions were answered. The explanations were clear and logical. I understood what Normandi Ellis was telling me. It was exciting and empowering. And it was conveyed in the language of symbols.Ellis covers 60 hieroglyphics in depth, more than enough to give reasonably well versed students the necessary information to pursue the teachings on their own. This is not, however, a divination how-to. The point is understanding, not foretelling. (“Numerology, per se, was never meant to be used to foretell the future, because time is always what is happening in the present.”)If you are ready to understand beyond words, this journey through 60 of the hieroglyphs will be extremely enlightening. If not, begin with knowing that hieroglyphics is the language of birds and go from there. (Seriously.)(Anna received a review copy of this book.)

An important symbol system for divination and more.
I received a review copy of this book. The author, Ellis, says, “Like dream language and poetry, hieroglyphs work on multiple levels, encompassing all levels simultaneously. That are symbolic, and sensory (image), and vibratory (sounds), and filled with mythologies (narrative).” The word hieroglyph itself means “sacred carvings” in Greek. Along with the Mesopotamians, the Egyptians independently invented the first written language about 5,000 years ago. The Egyptian system contained about 1,000 symbols and this book uses 60 important hieroglyphs, many the names of gods, as magical symbols. These symbols have meanings in their own right, and additional meanings depending upon adjacent symbols. In some ways the symbols are like words, in others like letters (which need to be combined to make meaning), and in others are pictographs. To study these hieroglyphs is to study the philosophy and culture of Ancient Egypt. Many symbols contain flora and fauna native to that region. All this is incorporated into the mythology. The symbols lend themselves to chanting, meditation, or divination. For divination, Ellis gives several pages of information about each hieroglyph, including a simplified drawing that we can use as a guide to make our own cards, an activity Ellis encourages. The images of these hieroglyphs can be used (much like Runes) as symbols of protection when written on a surface of an object or building. Particularly this is true to make an amulet for personal protection or to draw on the attributes of a particular hieroglyph.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs or culture, anyone looking for a new divination system, anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of divination, and anyone who would like to expand their ability to read any cards. In particular the several card spreads offered lend themselves to many different types of cards, including most tarot and many oracle decks.
